The New News Boss in Bean Town

Rob Cartwright has been named the incoming vice president of news for WBZ-TV, with a start date of September 29. The announcement was made by Johnny Green, president and general manager of CBS Boston, to whom Cartwright will report.

Cartwright joins WBZ from Austin, Texas, where he has served as news director for CBS affiliate KEYE-TV and Telemundo Austin since 2014. He has nearly three decades of experience in broadcast journalism.

“Rob is a proven newsroom leader with a passion for local journalism and a track record of excellence,” Green said. “His experience, integrity and dedication to community-focused reporting make him the ideal person to lead our news team into the future.”

Prior to his role in Austin, Cartwright was the news director at WSYR-TV in Syracuse, N.Y., and held news management positions in Washington, D.C., and Dallas. His experience includes leading coverage of major events like multiple political conventions, the 2008 papal visit to Washington, D.C., and Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

Cartwright is a recipient of an Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Newscast and is a fellow with the Carol Kneeland Project for Responsible Journalism.
