Fox News Host Contracts Malaria
/Fox News anchor John Roberts is recovering from what he described as a "severe" case of malaria, which manifested with alarming symptoms, including "uncontrolled shivering," while he was live on air.
The 68-year-old host of "America Reports" revealed that he was diagnosed with the potentially life-threatening, mosquito-borne illness this past Monday. The ordeal began with symptoms he initially mistook for something far less serious.
"I had been hurting from the top of my head to the tip of my toes. Literally everywhere," Roberts told People magazine. He first dismissed the feelings as "just muscle cramps and aches." However, the situation escalated during his broadcast when he was "beset with uncontrolled shivering," leading him to believe he might have the flu.
His journey to a diagnosis began with a visit to a rheumatologist, where tests revealed low levels of both platelets and white blood cells. He was immediately sent to the emergency room, where the true cause of his illness was identified.
Reflecting on the moment he was diagnosed, Roberts recalled his thought process: "I thought, 'Of course you have malaria… You never do anything in small measures.'" He admitted to being "a little scared," acknowledging that "malaria can be deadly if left unchecked."
While uncertain of the official medical classification, Roberts did not downplay the intensity of his experience. "I don’t know exactly how ‘severe’ it was... but it sure felt severe," he stated. "I have never felt that sick in my life."
