The End of an Era

The very first time I got on the internet, I dialed into AOL on my 14.4K modem

You couldn’t open your mail or a magazine, without an AOL disk falling out.

The internet was very slow in those days, but it was fascinating. As part of your AOL membership, you got 5 hours of time for $20 a month, and it was $2.95 an hour after that.

I think my first month’s bill was like $250.

AOL just announced that they are discontinuing its dial-up service in September.

The company says that nearly 160,000 people were still dialing into the service, that is now coming to an end.

It was certainly a simpler time. No one was posting dance or makeup videos and not a single person was taking pictures of their outfit of the day, or what food they were eating.

I was hooked on the Internet that first day I dialed in, but I will admit, it was much more fun at that slower speed.

Just saying…
