When Moving Down in Markets Might be a Good Thing

A seasoned Journalist emailed FTVLive to talk about a Sports Reporter who is moving to a much smaller market.

Normally, the drop in markets is not a good thing, but in this case, it just might be.

Here’s the email:

WDBJ (Roanoke) Weekend Sports Reporter Kaitlin Wadulack announced that she is leaving the station and heading to KPLC in Lake Charles La. In doing so she is going from market 70 to market 177.

I actually think that this could be a good move for her and here's why. She came to Roanoke right out of college at a time when the station was starting to scale back it's sports coverage with the exception of high school football in the Fall.

She has been little used over the past 2 years and going to a much smaller station she will no doubt see more airtime over the next 5-6 months then her entire stay in Roanoke.

Hopefully she will use this opportunity to hone her skills and move back up the Gray food chain. Lake Charles is probably where she should have started in the first place.

Just one old guy's opinion.

I do think that as the talent pool gets smaller, TV stations are making hires of people that might not be ready for that size market. I don’t blame the talent, I blame the company doing the hiring. Wadulack was hired as an MMJ, but was not getting much FaceTime on air.

I agree, this could be a good move for Wadulack and it could pay bigger dividends in the end.

Stay tuned…
