Bounced in Boston (Again)

For the second time in her distinguished career, Dr. Mallika Marshall, the Emmy-award winning medical reporter for Boston's CBS-owned station WBZ-TV, has been laid off. Marshall, a highly visible and trusted presence on New England airwaves for more than two decades, confirmed her last day at the station is this Friday.

This marks a repeat of history for the physician. WBZ had previously cut ties with Marshall in 2010, with a station spokesperson stating at the time that they no longer required a full-time health anchor. She was brought back to WBZ in 2014 as a medical reporter, contributing regular health and science segments to the station’s broadcasts.

Marshall, a specialist in both internal medicine and pediatrics, has been the station’s HealthWatch Reporter since first joining in 2000. Her expertise has also been featured nationally on programs like CBS Mornings and the CBS Evening News.

“It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to provide reliable and credible health advice to the residents of the Commonwealth, New England, and all over the world for more than 25 years, especially now when it’s needed the most!” Marshall said in a text message to the Globe. “I’m certainly looking forward to what the next chapter brings.”

In an email to her colleagues, Marshall expressed her affection for the newsroom. "Everyone has been kind and supportive and professional and that’s a rare find in a workplace these days," she wrote. “You have been like family, and I’m going to miss chatting and laughing and dancing and joking and planning and executing and reporting and broadcasting with each and every one of you. And don’t forget who you are. You’re WBZ News, dagnabbit!!! The best news station in all of New England.”

Outside of her broadcast career, Dr. Marshall is a board-certified physician who teaches at Harvard Medical School and practices at Massachusetts General Hospital's facilities. She is the daughter of former ABC news anchor Carole Simpson.

WBZ-TV has been contacted for comment regarding Marshall’s departure and to inquire if other staff members were affected by layoffs.
