Gray Buys Tenneesee Station

Gray Media has reached an agreement to purchase WBBJ, the longtime ABC and CBS affiliate in Jackson, from Bahakel Communications. The deal, announced Tuesday, is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, pending federal regulatory approval.

WBBJ has been a fixture in West Tennessee since its launch 70 years ago and currently holds the position of the most-watched local news station in the Jackson market. Once the sale is finalized, WBBJ will join Gray’s regional cluster of stations, which includes operations in the neighboring markets of Memphis, Nashville, Huntsville, and Paducah.

For Charlotte-based Bahakel Communications, the sale of its Jackson asset signals a shift in corporate priorities. CEO Beverly Bahakel stated that the move allows the company to refocus its resources on its digital platforms and entertainment division.

"We are committed to ensuring a smooth and positive transition for WBBJ’s audience, advertisers, and employees," Bahakel said, adding that the company believes Gray is the right steward to maintain the station's local news legacy.

Atlanta-headquartered Gray Media plans to fund the acquisition using cash on hand. The company expects the transaction to be "immediately free cash flow accretive," meaning it is anticipated to add to the company’s cash earnings shortly after closing.

"Gray is honored to be entrusted by Bahakel Communications as the next long-term stewards of WBBJ 7," said Kevin Latek, Gray’s Chief Legal and Development Officer. Latek noted that Gray intends to integrate WBBJ into its existing regional news and sports network to enhance local service.
