Dissing TV Agents

KSHB (Kansas City) Traffic Anchor Daniela Leon used her social media to take a swipe at a TV agent that turned her down for representation.

She posted this video taking a shot at the agent who said no. She did not name the agent, so we can’t tell you who it is. But, I don’t think all TV agents should be painted with the same brush.

I can assure you that there are both very good and very bad TV agents out there. I can name a number of people working in top 3 markets or at the networks, who likely would not have gotten there without an agent.

Do I think everyone should hire an agent? No, it depends on what your goals are and how you want to get there.

But, let me give you an example. I know a station that was looking to hire two MMJ positions at almost the exact same time. When the jobs were filled, one person who was hired did not have an agent and the other person hired did have an agent. The one with the agent got 3 more days of vacation in year one and was paid $8000 more a year for the job.

So, yes, you could land that job without an agent and this is proof of that. But, you also could land the job with an agent and get better pay and a bit better on benefits.

I’m not here to tell you that you must use an agent and it’s the only way to go. I’m telling you, all agents are different and there are some really good ones and some pretty shitty ones.

What I wouldn’t do is take advice only from a traffic anchor in Kansas City. I’m not saying she’s wrong, but for every one of her stories, there is one on the other side.

If you’re looking for an agent you can trust, you can look at the agents who help sponsor FTVLive. They have ads on this page. I can assure you, I have turned down a number of agents who wanted to be featured on FTVLive. I say no to agents, just like they said no to Daniela Leon.

Not all agents are good, but there are some very good ones out there.
