Another Scripps Anchor Walking Away

WPTV Chief Meteorologist Steve Weagle is retiring after more than 27 years at the station, where he became a fixture in South Florida's hurricane coverage. His final day on air is scheduled for December 12.

Weagle, who joined WPTV after working for the Canadian Weather Service, stated the decision was driven by a desire for more time with his family, including a grandchild, and to travel.

"I am retiring after a little over 27 years here, and it's bittersweet,” Weagle said. “I love this place... I want to do other things in life. I have a grandchild now, I have my wife and we want to travel more and just enjoy life."

Throughout his tenure, Weagle was noted for his measured, calming demeanor while covering major storms that impacted the region, including Hurricanes Frances, Jeanne, Wilma, Floyd, Dorian, and Milton. He often credited viewers for their support during these critical times.

"I have to thank viewers over the years, because they have been so supportive of me, and so gracious, and we share a special bond in the hurricanes," Weagle noted, adding that many viewers told him his voice was what helped them through the storms.

WPTV, a station owned by Scripps Company, plans to broadcast a look back at Weagle’s career and contributions in the weeks leading up to his departure.
