Signing Off in Philly
/Veteran broadcast journalist Jim Donovan, a familiar face to morning news viewers in the Philadelphia region and a fixture of local television for more than two decades, has announced his retirement. Donovan informed viewers of his decision during Wednesday morning's newscast on KYW. His final broadcast is scheduled for Friday, December 19th.
Donovan is stepping away from a distinguished 39-year career in broadcast news, with the last 22 years spent anchoring at KYW, the station formerly known as CBS Philadelphia. He made it clear the decision was entirely his own.
“It’s time for me to jump off the TV news roller coaster and observe the world from a different vantage point,” Donovan told his audience. “The alarm clock has been going off at 2 a.m. and has taken its toll over the years. I’m looking forward to a new chapter in life with normal people hours. It has been an honor to bring you the news each morning."
The move marks the end of a lifelong dream for Donovan, who first aspired to be a journalist when he was just nine years old. His career began in 1987 as an intern at WWOR-TV in New Jersey, eventually taking him through markets in North Carolina and Ohio before he found his permanent home in Philadelphia in 2004.
He initially joined KYW as the popular “On Your Side” consumer reporter, a role in which he became known for his advocacy, helping thousands of viewers resolve complex issues and recover funds. In 2015, he transitioned to become the morning newscast anchor. Among the many stories he covered, Donovan has frequently cited Pope Francis’ 2015 visit to Philadelphia as one of the most memorable moments of his anchor tenure.
The station acknowledged Donovan’s profound impact on the community. "Jim Donovan is a Philadelphia institution,” said Kelly Frank, president and general manager of KYW. “His passion for advocacy, his commitment to our viewers and his ability to connect with the community have made him a trusted voice in homes across the region. We are grateful for his leadership, his heart, and the legacy he leaves behind.”
In a heartfelt message to fans via a Facebook livestream, Donovan reflected on his departure, expressing contentment with his professional life. “I’m not leaving with any regrets, I’m just leaving with a smile on my face, a heart full of love, and the fact that this career, that dream from 9 years old, I made it happen and it was all because of you guys and your support,” he concluded.
