The Illusion of TV News

A week ago, FTVLive told you how WABC Reporter Janice Yu had left the station and had lost some faith in TV news as an industry.

Another former TV news person sent us this email, and can totally relate to Yu and her thoughts on the business.

Here is what they had to say.

It certainly is sad to see Janice Yu leave the business.  Her reporting at WABC is top notch.  While I'm sad to see her go, I can certainly relate to her feelings on the "grass not always being greener".

When I first began in TV news I worked at a shitty Sinclair station.  We were a young, scrappy newsroom.  Stuff barely worked.  There was lots of drama, but we all had fun working with each other.  I spent my days day dreaming about what it would be like to work at a bigger and better station.  I'd watch my "dream" newscasts and try to model my work after theirs.

Two years later, my dream job at a powerhouse Hearst station called.  (The station has since fallen into mediocrity and is now a shell of its former self.)  Everything worked perfectly there.  Everyone got along.  All the equipment worked properly.  Everyone did their job and they did it well.  Once the star struck bliss faded away, I realized I was just a small fish in a very big pond.  My colleagues were now much older and more experienced and the drama was gone.  So was my generous vacation policy at Sinclair.

I was bored as ever in my "dream job".  That's when I began day dreaming about a career outside TV news.  It just goes to show that the fun in life lies not in the having, but in the desiring.  Also, misery loves company.
