Scripps Swinging the Blade in Cincy

Scripps is getting ready to whack anchors at their flagship station.

The company is getting ready to kick at least two anchors to the curb at WCPO in Cincinnati.

WCPO General Manager Jeff Brogan, who apparently has drank gallons of the Scripps kool-aid, says, "We are making changes to staffing so we can build the largest reporting staff of any newsroom in Cincinnati. This will help us deliver the best coverage of communities across the Tri-State," adding, "We are adding jobs that focus on our reporting and storytelling and will use the latest technology to help enhance our content."

He then used the very overused line that “people told us what they want.”

"People told us what they want, and we got the message, loud and clear. They care most about the coverage we provide in their neighborhood. That is where we are investing," Brogan says.

Of course, anyone who has followed the decimation of the Scripps stations knows this is all about cost-cutting and not what viewers have told them “loud and clear.”

Brogan did finally get around to say that this was about money. "Most people get news in different ways than they did 15, 10 or even five years ago," Brogan says. "Like everybody else, our businesses sometimes must tighten our belts. While we are doing that, our priority is keeping up with audience needs, investing in the most important areas, and making sure our business is built to last."

As for the departure of two anchors, "we are focused on handling every step with care and respect for our team," Brogan added.

I won’t comment on that line.
