Replaced in Cleveland

Harris

WKYC Morning Anchor Maureen Kyle announced that she was leaving the Tegna station’s morning newscast and taking a step back.

“Is it possible to be heartbroken and excited all at the same time,” she told viewers.

Before that announcement happened, a Tegna source told FTVLive that WKYC management was replacing Kyle on the morning news with longtime WEWS Anchor Danita Harris.

Harris left the Scripps station back in December after 24 years at the station, “Scripps and the management at WEWS offered me the option to stay,” Harris said at the time. “It was a decision that I made because I felt it was the best for me.”

This is textbook Tegna.

They try hiring someone from across the street, and they think they will shoot to the top of the ratings.

Look at Tegna’s DC station, WUSA. They have hired at least four Anchors from WTTG, thinking that this would move the ratings.

But they are still in the ratings basement.

The problem isn’t the anchors; it’s Tegna’s production of news and the crap that is put on the air. If you produce a shitty newscast, viewers aren’t going to watch it, despite who the anchor is.

Hiring Harris, who’s well-liked in Cleveland is fine, but if your newscast still sucks, people aren’t going to watch.

As for Kyle taking a step back from anchoring? We’ll let you decide if you think that’s the real story.
