What Happened at WOOD?

Back in February, WOOD-TV News Director Brad Kessie sent this internal email to the staff:

If you can’t read it, it says:

Good Afternoon

I am sick and tired of our spelling errors. I'm so tired of emails from viewers who point out how bad we look when we can't spell. I'm so tired and so mad - I'M PUTTING MY MONEY ON THE LINE. And anyone who knows me realizes that's a big deal.

Starting Thursday, February 1, we're running a contest. It's WOOD LOVES TO SPELL CORRECTLY MONTH.

Here are the rules:

If we see five or fewer spelling errors in graphics and lower thirds during the month of February, I will cover the opening costs for anyone who shows up to Brewery Vivant on

Friday, March 1 between 7:00-8:00 p.m.

If we have more than five spelling errors in graphics and lower thirds during the month of February, I will make a $250 donation to the United Way on behalf of "The People Who Can't Spell at News 8"_ I chose the United Way because I served on its board

included Art and News Ops on this email. They play roles in our newscasts. They might be the extra set of eyes you need. They're invited to your 3/1 victory party if you can pull this off.

Either we get to toast your spelling prowess, or the United Way gets to celebrate because you can't spell. Which will it be???

I don’t know if the staff drank or if the United Way got the money.

I feel you should give money to the charity either way. I would hate to think the staff drank away cash that could do some good.
