Signing Off in Buffalo
/Longtime WGRZ Weather Anchor Maria Genero says that she is leaving the Tegna station next month.
“After 17 years at Channel 2, it has become apparent to me that it is time to step away,” Genero told the Buffalo News. “I am thankful for my many years at the station and the opportunities that it has offered me. My decision to leave is based on my desire to explore other avenues than solely being a weathercaster. Channel 2 was well aware that this would be my last contract as a weathercaster and my desire to move away from the weather desk. I thank them for a wonderful 17 years and wish them nothing but the best.”
The News reports that Genero said she declined a contract offer to stay in the weather department. She apparently was as sick of doing the weather as viewers are of the repetitiveness of weather forecasts.
“I have done it for so many years,” said Genero. “With the addition of so many newscasts, the redundancy became too much.”
Genero will be the third popular personality at the NBC affiliate to depart over the last four months.
