New Hires in Seattle

After losing a lot of news staff, it appears, according to an internal memo, that KCPQ is reloading.

Abby Acone is joining FOX 13 as a meteorologist and weather anchor. Many of you know Abby from her work during the last three years as a meteorologist and news reporter over at KOMO. Before that, she earned her stripes covering snowstorms and tornadoes (sometimes simultaneously!) in Colorado Springs. Abby is a Bellevue native and WSU grad, who is excited to bring her passion for weather and science to a full time forecasting role here at FOX 13. She will be our weekend morning meteorologist and appear alongside Brian for team weather coverage on the AM news three days per week. Abby’s first day will be Wednesday, December 8.

Matthew Smith is joining FOX 13 as an anchor and reporter. Most recently, he’s been the morning live desk anchor/reporter over at KIRO. Matt brings more than 15 years of reporting and anchoring experience in markets across the country – including in his home state of Michigan. Now, he’s proud to establish deeper roots in the Puget Sound region with his wife and their new foster son. Matt’s first day will be Monday, November 22, and he’ll be co-anchoring the PM news on Fridays and Saturdays alongside Hana Kim.

Alejandra Guzman is joining FOX 13 as a general assignment reporter. Most recently, she spent two years at the Sinclair NBC/FOX duopoly in San Antonio, TX. Alejandra’s colleagues report she always comes to the newsroom with enterprising story ideas, and develops strong relationships with her contacts and sources. As a bilingual journalist, Alejandra has reported news in both English and Spanish over the course of her career. Alejandra and her 5-year-old corgi Zoe are eager to arrive in Seattle very soon. Her first day will be Monday, January 10, and she’ll be reporting on the nightside shift.

Dan Griffin is joining FOX 13 as a general assignment reporter. Currently, he’s at WLWT in Cincinnati covering crime, courts and corruption. Dan’s colleagues describe him as someone who can produce meaningful storytelling, as well as juggle breaking news live shots with ease. In particular, photographers say he’s a terrific collaborator who always works as a team in the field. Dan is a proud “Kentucky boy” who is eager to hit the ground running covering news in Western Washington. His first day will be Monday, January 10, and he’ll be reporting weekends and weekdays on the AM news.
