Rust Takes Down Scripps Station's Tower

Scripps owned KRIS (Corpus Christi) lost its TV tower when it went down in high winds.

Scripps says the wind took down the tower, but it appears that rust was a big factor.

Wireless Estimator says that the 988-foot TV broadcast tower collapsed in Robstown, Texas as a result of a rusted guy wire that detached near its anchor.

The tower was one of 11 structures singled out by the FCC earlier this year as having lighting issues when Scripps agreed to pay a $1.1 million penalty to settle an FCC investigation into the broadcaster’s malfunctioning TV tower lights used to alert nearby airplanes.

No tower techs or station personnel were on site when the structure failed.
