Kicking off the best list and just like the 5th Worst, the 5th Best is also a News Director….

We blow into the Windy City of Chicago and find Jennifer Lyons at WGN.

For all of 2019, Lyons was the News Director at WGN, but in early of 2020, she was bumped up to the head of Nexstar’s new cable newscasts on WGN America.

For those that don’t know, WGN and WGN America are two different channels.

Towards the end of 2018, Lyons thought she had enough of TV news and actually quit the TV business in which she had been in for 25 years. She went to work for the Catholic church and after trying life outside of TV news, she knew she wanted to come back into the business.

Many people would not be able to swallow their ego and admit that they made a mistake quitting TV news. But, Lyons did and was able to come back to WGN and her old job as News Director.

In 2019, her year was filled with less turmoil and she continued to lead a newsroom that has spent years wondering who their owner was going to be?

Was it going to be Sinclair, Nexstar or someone else?

She kept a nervous staff focused on doing their jobs and WGN is now the crown jewel of Nexstar.

Lyons now will try and build a cable news station from the ground up.

Nexstar made a great choice in putting her in charge and we will see how it goes?
