Selling Out to Arizona

FTVLive was the FIRST to tell you that Nexstar owned KLAS was swinging the ax and eliminated jobs.

Last week the station kicked 18 employees to the curb and more are expected.

The Las Vegas station is not making any friends on the Strip either.

KLAS has started running an ad for a casino that is located in Arizona during their newscast.

The station is airing spots for Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale. Sin City Casinos are said to be unhappy with KLAS running the ads.

Witness Puts Cigarette Out on Reporter's Face

An Australian Reporter tried interview a witness in a murder case, when the witness used the Reporter's face as an ashtray.

The woman stubbed out her cigarette on the Reporter's face and then the witness's friend started barking like a dog for no apparent reason.

When the Reporter tried to ask another question, the woman blew smoke in her face.

Not exactly a good day at work for the Reporter, ya think?

Wonder if He Knew Someone?

Ryan Shaver is a Sports Anchor at KIMT in the tiny market of Mason City, Iowa..... but not for long.

Shaver has landed a job at KARE in Minneapolis. That's from market 153 to market 15 with just a few years experience.

If the name sounds familiar, it might be because Ryan is the son of Randy Shaver. Randy is the main Anchor at KARE.

In this business, who you know can be as important as what you know.

Fired Philly Anchor's N-Word Lawsuit Begins

A white former Philly Anchor was fired for using the N-word in a newsroom meeting back in 2007.

He felt it was unfair, sued his station and now the trial has finally begun.

Victim of workplace double standard or his own poor judgment? A jury is faced with that question as a race-discrimination lawsuit filed by former WTXF Fox29 Anchorman Tom Burlington began today at U.S. District Court in Philadelphia.

Burlington contends the station fired him after he uttered the "n-word," while African American employees were not disciplined for using the same word.

In his lawsuit, Burlington said he had been unable to find work as a TV newscaster because of his termination and the subsequent publicity. He is seeking unspecified damages. A court filing contends that he lost nearly $3 million in past and future earnings.

Burlington is scheduled to take the stand Today before the all-white jury.

WTXF Attorneys did not return calls for comment. In court papers filed last month, they asserted there was no evidence that race played a role in the decision to end Burlington's contract. They attributed his firing to "his admitted misconduct, his poor judgment, the upset it caused in the newsroom, and the resulting negative publicity."

Burlington, who now works as a real estate agent on the Main Line, admits to saying the word in June 2007 as reporters and editors reviewed a story about the symbolic burial of the racial epithet by the Philadelphia Youth Council of the NAACP. During the council's mock funeral, covered by a Fox29 reporter, participants used the word at least 100 times.

It was during the discussion that Burlington, scheduled to anchor the evening broadcast, asked the question: "Does this mean we can finally say the word n-----?"

Nicole Wolfe, one of three African American employees at the meeting, exclaimed "I can't believe you just said that!"

Burlington explained that by using "the n-word" rather than the word itself, the reporter gave the racial epithet more power. The group made a decision not to use the word on the broadcast that night, and Burlington apologized to Wolfe, according to his lawsuit.

An hour later, a report of the incident made its way to Burlington's coanchor, Joyce Evans, who is black.

Evans, who did not attend the staff meeting, confronted Burlington.

According to Burlington's suit, Evans delivered a stern rebuke, saying "Because you're white, you can never understand what it's like to be called a n-----, and ... you cannot use the word n-----."

Evans has denied using the word in her conversation with Burlington, according to court papers filed in response to the lawsuit. Her alleged use of the word will not be allowed during trial because Burlington did not complain about it in his suit, according to a May 27 memo written by U.S. District Court Judge R. Barclay Surrick.

Burlington contends that after the encounter, Evans orchestrated a behind-the-scenes campaign to have him terminated.

Burlington's attorney, Laura Mattiacci, declined to comment on the specifics of the case.

"We're very much looking forward to going to trial," she said.

Atlanta Station Names New Main Anchor

Earlier, FTVLive told you that WGCL had parted ways with Anchor Scott Light. We told you that the station was expected to name Light's replacement this week.

Well, they did do that just moments ago.

WGCL announced that starting next week, Ben Swann will be joining the station as an Anchor for its Early Evening and Late Newscasts.

“Ben is an accomplished anchor who also has a lot of experience on the digital side.  We look forward to putting him next to Sharon Reed and Tracye Hutchins on the news desk,” said CBS46 Vice President/General Manager Mark Pimentel.

Swann was most recently an Anchor/Reporter at WXIX in Cincinnati.  Prior to that he was an Anchor/Reporter at KTSM in El Paso, TX.  He got his start at KFOX in El Paso as an Anchor/ Reporter.  While there he received three Edward R. Murrow Awards and two regional Emmy Awards.

“To be given an opportunity to be an Anchor in a city like Atlanta is a chance of a lifetime.  I can’t wait to get there and get started,” said Swann.

“His work speaks for itself.  He’s very excited about the opportunity on-air and getting actively involved in the community,” said CBS46 News Director Larry Perret.

Judging by the photo the station sent to FTVLive, Swann leans to the left.

NY station Unveils Game Changing New Logo

NY station Unveils Game Changing New Logo

FTVLive got an email saying that, "everyone is talking about the new WABC logo."

I went over to my neighbor's house and asked him about it? He looked confused and then closed the door on my face.

So, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that, NOT everyone is talking about the new logo. But maybe some are and if you are interested, let's take a look at it, compared to the old logo.

Critics Say....Brian Stelter is a Douche

FTVLive thinks CNN's Brian Stelter was right on the money with his recent (as of this writing, because there might be a more recent recent before long, if you follow?) criticism of Fox News.

Stelter made some comment with regards to Fox News host Megyn Kelly's interview with the Duggar family.

First, FTVLive has to fess up, that up until this story broke, we had absolutely no clue who the Dugger family was and since the story broke we have not watched a single interview or show about them. Like many viewers, FTVLive just does not care about this story one bit, but the media is obsessed on it, so.....

Back to Stelter's criticism of Fox News....

On his show, Stelter had this to say about Kelly's interview with the Duggar's:

BRIAN STELTER: But what I was struck by most was the way she framed some of her questions. Take a look.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MEGYN KELLY, FOX NEWS: What the critics are going for is that you shouldn’t have been preaching about moral values when you had a secret like this your own family. The main charge we’ve heard from your critics has been, they’re hypocrites. They preached family values.

What I’m asking you is, can you understand the critics’ reaction to the news?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

STELTER: What she was saying was framing things as critics. Doesn’t it frame the Duggars as the victims of a nasty media?

BONNIE FULLER: Well, absolutely.

We agree with Stelter on this. Although we're not sure whether or not Kelly was taking a swipe at the media or not?

Saying "critics say" is a way to cop out when asking a tough question and TV people do it all the time.

It's like saying, "Hey I don't believe you are a bitch but, CRITICS SAY you're a total bitch, how do you respond to that?"

It's like the person asking the question doesn't have the courage to ask it, so they throw the "critics say" before the question and it's easier for them to ask it. It's a crutch and it's wrong and we agree with Brian Stelter.

But, FTVLive has to wonder, when CNN talent uses that very same crutch, including Stelter himself, why doesn't he call them out.

Here are some examples from CNN talent doing just that:

  • BRIAN TODD: But critics say you knew about his history…
  • ANDERSON COOPER: I guess, though, the critics say well, why not then, have the month
  • RICHARD QUEST: Your critics say you are moving away from the low-cost model…
  • WOLF BLITZER:  But your critics say you, Newt Gingrich, are fully capable of imploding…
  • ANDERSON COOPER: Dr. Israel, what about that? I mean, your critics say you’ve done no long-term studies…
  • SHANNON TRAVIS (to SARAH PALIN): Critics say you’re way too divisive…
  • ANDERSON COOPER: Senator Obama, your supporters say you are different. Your critics say you’re inexperienced…
  • JAKE TAPPER (to BARACK OBAMA): Your critics say this is diminished expectations…
  • BRIAN STELTER: The company’s critics say it is way too cozy with government…

If you're going to call out Megyn Kelly, wouldn't it be fair to call out those at CNN as well? We think so.

Critics say that Brian Stelter bashes Fox News because that is exactly what Jeff Zucker tells him to do?

How do you answer those critics Brian?

H/T Big hat-tip to the Cable Game for finding the CNN quotes.

Lights Out in Atlanta

Meredith owned WGCL, which as FTVLive has been telling you, has been blowing up it's on air talent for the past few months, has pushed the plunger again.

This time Anchor Scott Light, who has been at the station only 18 months has been sent packing.

Light anchored the evenings and FTVLive told you in the past that the station has been quietly looking for his replacement.

Word is the station has found their new male Anchor to sit alongside new hire Sharon Reed.

An announcement is expected this week.

Stay tuned....

NBC to Decide Future of BriWi this Week?

There is speculatiopn that this could be the week that NBC finally breaks its silence and announces just what they are going to do with their lying News Anchor.

Page Six writes that a decision about Brian Williams’ fate at NBC could come as early as this week — and it looks like the embattled anchor won’t be returning to “NBC Nightly News.”

Sources tell Page Six that Williams will likely lose his anchor chair following the lengthy internal investigation into his alleged tall tales.

But NBC brass — led by NBCUniversal CEO and president Steve Burke and NBC News chairman Andy Lack — have been looking for a way to keep him at the network in a different, yet-to-be-agreed-upon role. One source told us, “Brian’s six-month suspension is over in early August, and NBC chiefs are under pressure to come up with a solution. The talks are complicated and are ongoing, and there has not yet been a deal. But it is likely he won’t be back in the ‘Nightly’ anchor chair. A decision could be made as early as this week, if all sides can reach an agreement.”

Industry insiders said NBC News staff, led by Lack, have been encouraged to think of alternative roles for Williams.

But we are told the veteran anchor and his hard-charging attorney Robert Barnett are yet to agree and sign off on an alternative role. One insider said, “Many options are still on the table and are still being discussed, including ways to keep Brian at the network, or even for him to leave the network completely.”

Phoenix station Ditches their Assignment Desk

Back in March, FTVLive FIRST told you that scripps was looking to change their TV newsrooms into a place where digital comes before TV.

We told you that some Scripps stations were looking to replace their News Director's with a "Digital Content Person." We said that KNXV would be the first station that would start implementing these changes and they have.

Back in March KNXV hired Chris Kline as the new head of the newsroom to lead the station into the "digital first" age.

Now, sources tell FTVLive that KNXV has done away with the Assignment Desk. It is now called the "Real Time Desk."

The Assignment Editor's job is gone. So is the Managing Editor's job, the Planning Editor and the Web Producer's job.

The "Real Time Desk" will be staffed by 10 Real Time Desk Editors and 1 Executive Producer, who will oversee the Real Time Desk.

Staff will now work on digital first and then work for TV.

Should a TV station stop making TV their first priority? Is this the future of news? And what the hell is the Real Time Desk?

These are questions that we will hopefully see answered in the future. But yet the future is not real time....real time is now. So maybe we will never know.

Stay tuned....

Phoenix Station to go with 2 Assistant News Directors

Meredith DuOp KTVK/KPHO has hired a new Deuce, even though the stations already had an Assistant News Director.

Kathy Clark was bumped up to the AND job back ion February from her role as Executive Producer.

Now the station has bumped up Sybil Hoffman (pictured) to assistant news director as well.

Hoffman served as the station’s Executive Producer of Special Projects.

Hoffman has held management positions with the station including EP of the station’s morning show, Good Morning Arizona.

Looks like Meredith is going Double Deuce in the Valley of the Sun.

Columbus Reporter Catches Heat for Homeless Shaming

WSYX Consumer Reporter Tom Sussi was catching some social media heat for publicly shaming a homeless guy on his Facebook page:

After Sussi posted the picture with his comments, some viewers thought he crossed the line. A number of them posted comments taking Sussi to task:

But, where it really gets weird is when Sussi asks if he can come over to a viewer's house and take a "warm soapy bath."

No word if WSYX will be changing from "6 on you side" to "6 in your bathtub" but you never know.

We're betting station consultants are meeting on this as we speak.

Ummmm.....

TV stations like to send out teasers on social media for stories they are working on for a later newscast.

It's supposed to give viewers an idea of what's coming up and give them a bit of a look behind the scenes of the newsroom.

But, sometimes it might not be such a good idea.

You know, like when you are talking about a dead student and you have curlers in your hair as you get ready for air.

Here is a screen grad from KHOU in Houston's Facebook page:

Sometimes seeing behind the scenes of TV news is a bit like seeing how sausage is made. After you see that you will never eat sausage again.

Just saying....
