Bryant and Katie Back Together for Super Bowl Ad

Former Today Show anchors Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel are teaming up for a BMW Super Bowl ad, and once again they're having trouble understanding fancy new technology.

The ad starts with a famous 1994 clip from Today where the two are faced with the task of trying to tell their viewers how to send an email to NBC and have no clue.

Cut to present day. The two are seated in BMW's new all-electric car built in a carbon neutral wind-powered factory. As before, they're a bit befuddled by the gizmo.

"And it's built using wind, like from a wind mill?" asks Gumbel.

"Or a fan? Or a turbine? Or a fan...vine?" says Couric.

"What is i3 anyway?" asks Gumbel.

Looks like some things never change.

Here's that now viral clip from 1994:

Very Sad.....Anchor Announces Retirement and that He's Dying

Longtime WTVD (Raleigh Durham) Anchor Larry Stogner shocked viewers on when he told them he is retiring immediately.

Sadly it was not a very happy announcement.

Stogner surprised viewers with his plans to retire and what made it sad was he told his fans he is suffering from ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease.

Stogner has anchored the 6 p.m. news at WTVD continuously since 1982, making him one of the longest-serving anchors in the nation.

In his goodbye, Stgner said to viewers that many noticed that his speech was getting slower and then told them he has ALS "for which there is no cure."

He said that over the summer he took the ALS ice bucket challenge not knowing at the time that months later he would get the deadly disease.

The longtime Anchor said he is stepping down immediately to fight ALS and spend time with his wife and family.

He did say that he would return in two weeks to say his final goodbye and chat with his co-workers.

We wish Larry all the best and let's hope we can find a cure to ALS ASAP.

Newsies Brace for Another Storm of the Century

The big news for the northeast is another snowstorm and the hype machine is already cranked up to 10.

Weather Anchors are calling for much as 3 feet in New York City and stations are into full team smotherage already.

New Yorkers are being urged to stay home and not go to work by both the Mayor and the Governor.

And while storms happen across the country all winter long, because this is one is hitting New York City, expect to see extensive storm coverage on network newscasts, the cable news channels and CNN.

You can REALLY Trust Us

WJAR in Providence uses the tagline, "Coverage You Can Trust:

Proving that no one has an original idea anymore in TV News, competitor WLNE has rebranded their station with, "Coverage You Can Really Trust."

I think WJAR should comeback with, "Coverage You can Really, Really Trust" and force WLNE to go with "Really, Really, Really Trust."

It's like two school kids at the playground.

First one to say "Really times infinity," is the winner.

San Antonio Station Replenishes Anchor Team

After a steady string of anchor departures at San Antonio Fox affiliate KABB, the station is beginning to rebuild its news teams with fresh faces.

The latest hire is out of Harlingen, Texas: Ryan Wolf. Wolf will anchor KABB’s signature 9 p.m. newscast next to anchorwoman Elisa Amigo, also a relatively new hire, on February 3, according to a KABB/WOAI spokesman.

He’ll succeed Mike Valdes, a 20-year station veteran, who left TV News in September.

Prior to joining the S.A. station, Wolf anchored late news broadcasts at KBGT in Harlingen, which like KABB is in Sinclair food chain.

“We are very excited to have Ryan join our team,” said News Director Blaise Labbe.  “Sinclair has made a commitment to retain and promote talent within our company.  This opportunity afforded Ryan the ability to advance to a larger market and continue his career with the same company. For Fox San Antonio, we are getting a loyal Sinclair employee who happens to be an outstanding journalist.”

Back on The Dish in OK

The retrans pissing match between Griffin Communications' KWTV in Oklahoma City and KOTV in Tulsa is over.

In a message to viewers from David Griffin, he wrote:

Griffin Communications is happy to announce that we have reached an agreement with Dish Network to immediately resume all CBS programming, including News On 6 and Tulsa CW, for our viewers in Oklahoma. We look forward to continue providing Oklahoma's best local news, weather and sports as well as CBS programming to you.

We are sorry that you were stuck in the middle, but thank you for your patience and understanding.

Saturday evening both stations returned to the Dish bird and of course, term of the new agreement will not be release.

But, eventually, Dish customers in Oklahoma will see their satellite bill increase and Griffin Communication's bosses will get a nice bonus.

The rich get richer.

Former Miami TV Anchor Fired from Radio Gig

Former Miami TV Anchor Kelley Mitchell was fired from her radio gig last week.

Mitchell broke the news on her Facebook page that she was fired after three years as the voice of WLRN afternoon drive-time news on the NPR station.

Mitchell, best known in Miami as Rick Sanchez’ sidekick on the WSVN anchor desk for years, wrote that the station got rid of her on the day after Oscar, her Welsh Corgi, underwent its last treatment for cancer.

She has been chronicling the pooch’s battle for his life on the station.

“Thanks, WLRN,” Mitchell wrote, “you fired me one day after . . . Oscar finished his cancer treatment. My best to you, always.” she eventually took down the posting.

Said VP for News Tom Hudson: “WLRN does not comment on personnel issues.”

Of course they don't.

Even ESPN's Chris Berman Doesn't Like the ProBowl

The NFL ProBowl is a throw away game that is played the week before the Super Bowl to give football fans a fix before the big game.

The ProBowl is an awful game played by players going half speed and is not fun to watch.

Even for the people covering the game it seems like a drag.

Check out this video of ESPN's Chris Berman (a huge idiot) and his reaction to the ProBowl and the halftime entertainment.

He doesn't seem happy to say the least:

Fox News Anchor Interviews Her Dad about Deflate-Gate

Sometimes when a story is breaking you scroll through your contact list trying to find an expert on the subject.

Or if you're lucky, you just call Dad.

On Fox News Channel’s (FNC) Happening Now, co-host Jenna Lee had her Dad on the show to discuss allegations that the New England Patriots used balls that were deflated.

Lee's Dad is former NFL quarterback Bob Lee, who played for the Minnesota Vikings (where he played in two Super Bowls), the Atlanta Falcons and the Los Angeles Rams (now knows as the St. Louis Rams).

During the segment, Jenna joked, “You’re going to be the go-to analyst for Happening Now, Dad. I hope you’ll give us the exclusive. You can’t go anywhere else after this.”

We're guessing he won't.

Got to love Dads.

Sabrina Rodriguez: GUILTY

Former Sacramento Fox 40 anchor Sabrina Rodriguez made a plea deal today to a misdemeanor, avoiding a possible felony conviction for shoplifting. The judge found her guilty.

Rodriguez will have to wear an ankle monitoring device for 30 days under house arrest, be placed on 3 years of probation and pay $2,300 in restitution.

The case is full of drama and involves her then boyfriend, Nicholas Gray. Of course now, Rodriquez has broken up with Gray and says she just wants to get on with her life.

The real entertainment in this case are the interviews The Sacramento Bee did with Rodriquez.

We wish Sabrina well in her new career at Circle K while becoming an actress.

JC Hayward "Retires" After 40+ Years

Well known WUSA and DC anchor JC Hayward is "retiring" (Yeah, right) after 43 years. Normally, that would be cause for a big celebration and maybe a Rolex from Gannett, however, Hayward is retiring while on suspension.

Hayward has been off the air for more than a year as FTVLive first reported in October 2013. Hayward is named in a lawsuit brought by DC's Attorney General over $3 Million of money from a charter school that appears to have been funneled into private companies. The lawsuit alleges Hayward was involved by using her position on the school's board of trustees and also owning one of the beneficiary companies.

Here's the spin on Hayward's 'resignation' from WUSA.

JC, I'd keep the watch in its box. You may need to pawn it.

Change In The Weather In Buffalo

The wind is going to blow some meteorologists around (see what we did there?) in Buffalo. WIVB -TV is moving talent.

Todd Santos is going from AM to PM. Mike Cejka will move from PM to AM. No big deal. The interesting part is Santos will be joining Don Paul on some of the evening shows. Two meteorologists on one shift?

Read the spin from the station to The Buffalo News.

Let's sit back and see if this is permanent, or an attempt at a 'smooth' transition.

Reporter Helps Cops Catch Suspect At School

It's not 'breaking news' to hear of the media sometimes helping cops nab a bad guy. But it's not often you hear of a market's high-profile talent helping without reporting the story first.

WOIO investigative reporter Scott Taylor got a tip on some idiot that posted threats on social media about a Cleveland area school. Cops worked overnight to track down the guy and had him in handcuffs before the school bell rang this morning.

The kids probably wished Taylor would have waited until the weekend so they could have had today off.
