Former Boston Anchor Called as Juror in Marathon Bombing Case

Former Boston Anchor Called as Juror in Marathon Bombing Case

On Monday, FTVLive has been called for jury duty here in North Florida. We very much doubt it will not be nearly as exciting of a case as one former Boston Anchor got called for.

It was a typical Tuesday night former WBZ-TV anchor Ted Wayman got a jury notice and showed up at the federal courthouse.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bigger media circus out front of federal court. And I’ve covered a lot of them,” Wayman said.

The former news anchor was one of hundreds who got the call to come to Federal Court for jury duty, showing up with no other information.

More after the jump.

Jeff Zucker says No to Charlie Hebdo Cartoons, Yes to Al Qaeda

CNN boss Jeff Zucker is catching flack for saying that the network would not show cover of the new edition of Charlie Hebdo, depicting the prophet Muhammad showing solidarity with the victims of the radical Islamist attack on the magazine’s offices last week that killed 12 people.

CNN host Carol Costello explained it this way: “CNN will not show you the new cover, which depicts the prophet Muhammad, because it is our policy not to show potentially offensive images of the prophet.”

We thus have two CNN rationales for self-censoring the work of Charlie Hebdo. When the network declined last week to show the edgy caricatures that appeared to have motivated the attack, CNN Worldwide President Jeff Zucker cited safety as an explanation.

But that hasn't stopped Zucker and CNN from airing al Qaeda propaganda.

The Washington Post writes that just after Wednesday’s attacks, CNN-er Randi Kaye prepared a report on how slain Charlie Hebdo editor Stephane Charbonnier had been targeted by al-Qaeda, a fact reported far and wide in the media. The reporting didn’t stop there. In a package that aired on “Anderson Cooper 360,” Kaye focused on a page from the March 2013 edition of the al-Qaeda magazine “Inspire” that identified a group of targets.

“YES WE CAN. A BULLET A DAY KEEPS THE INFIDEL AWAY. Defend prophet Muhammad peace be upon him,” reads an introduction to the list. In her package, Kaye explained the rest of the presentation: “The poster reads, ‘WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE FOR CRIMES AGAINST ISLAM,’ published by al-Qaeda.

Jeff Zucker has headed down the slippery slope and fell on his ass.

Both Fox News and CBS did show the cover of the magazine and did not censor the news.

Ann Curry to Finally Leave NBC (Updated)

2 1/2 years after Matt Lauer got Ann Curry kicked off the Today Show, the former morning Anchor is leaving NBC altogether.

Page Six reports that NBC is expected to imminently announce a deal for Curry to leave the network following weeks of negotiations to end her contract, reportedly worth up to $12 million a year.

The gossip columns sources say that Curry, 58, who has provided few reports for NBC News despite her huge contract, is ready to leave. One NBC insider said, “Ann has been unhappy for a long time because she’s basically doing nothing, while NBC is unhappy that she has been paid a lot of money to do nothing.”

Sources say, the negotiations have been more careful and protracted, and Curry will soon announce she is setting up her own production company to provide news reports and documentaries to numerous outlets, including NBC.

Update: NBC sources confirm with FTVLive that Curry is in fact leaving the Peacock. Announcement coming very soon.

Full Frontral Penis on Dallas Station's Website

We're guessing that WFAA in Dallas was trying their best to get more clicks to the station's website.

A quick glance at the website shows a big photo from last night's College Football Championship. But below that photo in the middle...what the hell?

Not sure who's dick that is and we're really not sure why the station posted it to their site? But, it does prove that things aren't always bigger in Texas.

Just saying.....

Sports Anchor Pushed Out in Dallas

KTVT (Dallas) and longtime Sports Anchor Babe Laufenberg are parting ways after the two sides could not agree on a new contract.

Laufenberg, a former NFL Quarterback has been with the station for 17 years. Laufenberg still holds numerous season and career passing records at his alma mater, Indiana University, and he was drafted by the Washington Redskins in 1983.

But, now the former QB has been sacked:

CNN to Drone On

Not satisfied with the current pace of planes going missing, CNN will soon start losing aircraft of their own.

The FAA is permitting CNN to start using drones as a reporting tool.

The FAA has been very slow to react to drones being used for news coverage and maybe this is the organization's first big step.

While CNN's own active efforts to bring drones into the newsroom started June 2014, experimentation with drone journalism is almost as old as the hobby itself. News agencies like the Associated Press have used drones to cover huge disaster stories, and journalism schools, such as the University of Missouri and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, integrated drones into their classes (until the FAA squashed that idea in 2013.) There's even a professional society of drone journalists, and several news outlets have fought the FAA on its drone kibosh saying it infringes on the first amendment.

I get the feeling that something with a drone and Don Lemon is not going to end well.

Just saying.

Former Sports Anchor Takes the Stand in His Fraud Trial

Former Philly Sports Anchor Don Tollefson took the stand in his fraud trial.

Tollefson offered his most detailed explanation to date for why he failed to deliver sports-related travel packages he sold in the name of charity.

Tollefson, who is representing himself, told the jury that his charity's financial troubles began in 2012, four years after he lost his job at WTXF Fox Philly.

He said he continued to "spend money like I was making it in salary form" while borrowing cash from his wife to operate his Winning Ways organization, which helps poor children.

In response to the charity's depleting funds, Tollefson said, he tried to raise money by selling more travel packages to the Super Bowl in 2013 than he ever had before.

But the trip was a logistical disaster, he said.

"I just wasn't able to turn it around the way I thought I would have been able to," he said. "I promised people, and I am deeply disappointed in myself as a human being."

Tollefson is accused of selling more than 200 bogus travel packages and pocketing $340,000. Most of Tollefson's testimony Monday focused on his life growing up in San Francisco, his career in broadcasting, and his addiction to alcohol and painkillers.

He plans to offer more of his own testimony Tuesday . Then he will be subjected to cross-examination by Matt Weintraub of the Bucks County district attorney's office.

Monday was the first full day of Tollefson's defense after the prosecution presented its case over four days last week. Tollefson's first witnesses were a grandmother and a golf-tournament organizer, both of whom said Tollefson always put children first.

The trial continues Today.

It's Not Like We didn't tell you

Back on December 12th, FTVLive wrote, "....hearing rumblings that KNXV News Director Pat Costello might be leaving the sun for the rain. Word is that KOMO in Seattle may hire the Phoenix news boss to replace Holly Gauntt, who left the station for Denver."

Late yesterday in an email to the staff, KNXV VP/GM Anita Helt just sent out an internal email saying that Costello was leaving the station and headed to KOMO in Seattle. Yep, exactly one month after FTVLive reported is was going to happen.

Costello packs his bags for the Northwest in February,  Asst. ND Jamie Ioos takes over as the interim ND for now.

Moved to Mornings in Big D (Updated)

KTVT in Dallas quietly moved evening/late Anchor Karen Borta to the morning show yesterday.

Borta hit the air wide awake at 4:30 a.m. to minimal fanfare.

Colleagues made only brief mentions of her debut, with Borta herself saying at the end of the two-and-a-half hour shift, “And I’ve got the first show under my belt.”

KTVT has never been better than fourth in morning ratings and the show is undergoing an overhaul.

The station confirms that its early morning foursome is still temporary. Both co-anchor Jason Allen and traffic reporter Tammy Dombeck have been deemed interim replacements while the station searches for “permanent” members of the team under relatively new news director Mike Garber.

Update: This morning we reported this story like it was new. It was not, in fact FTVLive reported Borta's move to mornings back on December 19th. Looks like sometimes we even scoop ourselves. Although to be honest we blame it on a late night cheering on the Buckeyes to a National Championship. Go Bucks!

New ND Named in Memphis

Cox has named Patti McGettigan as its new News Director for WHBQ in Memphis.

“I am thrilled to have someone of Patti’s caliber join the WHBQ team,” said CMG Memphis VP and General Manager Paul Briggs. “Patti is a proven leader and has a strong commitment to delivering an outstanding news product on all platforms. She and her team will grow WHBQ’s local news coverage and ensure that we are serving the Memphis community with the very best news product possible.”

McGettigan spent 14 years in leadership roles at LinMedia's WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, Mich., including nearly 10 years as News Director. She also worked three years at Lin's WISH as News Director.

“I believe strongly in the values and vision of Cox Media Group and am looking forward to joining the team at FOX 13 in Memphis,” said McGettigan. “We hope to focus on the growth and development of our local news commitment while seeking to serve the community in areas underserved in the past.”

Lauer Just Wanted His Sleep

You have to feel a bit sorry for Matt Lauer. The Today Show star was stuck a flight with a passenger that wanted to talk about the all-day funeral he had been to.

Lauer was originally seated next to the grieving man on the United flight from LAX that landed before dawn Monday at Newark.

“Lauer asked a flight attendant, ‘Is this a full flight?’ He just wanted to get away from this weird guy and find a seat where he could sleep,” said a fellow passenger.

A passenger nearby overheard Lauer, and offered to switch, and the anchorman ended up sitting next to Morales, who was already fast asleep.

“Lauer wanted to move to two empty seats so he could stretch out, but the flight attendants had just upgraded two people from coach,” said my source. “He sat down next to Natalie, put a blanket over his head and slept the whole way.”

We've all been there Matt.
