Turner Layoffs Have Started

Sources tell FTVLive that the massive layoffs at Turner properties has started.

FTVLive told you that the company is looking to get rid of almost 1500 employees as it makes financial cuts.

We have not heard of any layoffs at CNN (which will ax about 300) as of yet, but we are told that the cuts have happened at other Turner stations.

Sources say that at one of Turner's Latin America brands, the Tech/IT was all but wiped out.

Insiders think that there will be waves of people/teams laid off every day from now thru the end of the cuts.

If I worked at a Turner station I would call in sick every day for the next few weeks.

TV Reporter Becomes Ill After Crime Scene Photos are Shown in Court

A Cleveland TV Reporter might have helped sway the jury and the Reporter never said a word.

The WJW Reporter became ill as prosecutors showed crime scene photos of a prominent New Franklin Township couple bludgeoned to death with a sledgehammer.

Defense attorneys for Shawn Ford, the 20-year-old accused of killing Jeffrey and Margaret Schobert in 2013, raised concern that the reporter's reaction to the graphic crime scene photos could prejudice the jury.

Defense attorney Jonathan Sinn told Summit County Common Pleas Judge Tom Parker that he watched the Reporter from Channel 8 WJW kneel down, put her head down and "duck walk" over to a door to leave the courtroom.

Parker said he learned that the woman felt ill before coming into the courtroom and said the crime scene photos may have contributed to her leaving the courtroom.

"I don't believe the jury noticed that," the judge said.

Ax Swings at Boston's WBZ

Longtime WBZ Reporter Joe Shortsleeve has been shafted.

Shortsleeve and WBZ general assignment Reporter Sera Congi were let go when their contracts were not renewed.

New Hampshire Bureau Chief MichaelRosenfield was also given his walking papers and will be finishing up in a few days.

“Their contracts are not being renewed,” station spokesgal Ro Dooley said. “We thank them for their contributions to the station and wish them well in the future.”

Shortsleeve was the chief Correspondent for WBZ News at 5, 6 and 11 p.m. and had been at the station for 24 years. An award-winning reporter and part-time anchorman, Shortsleeve routinely broke big stories for the station.

Shortsleeve was perhaps best known outside of Boston for his reporting on the 1999 death of John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife and sister-in-law in a plane crash off Martha’s Vineyard. He reported live for CBS News and CNN, in addition to WBZ during the weeklong search for Kennedy’s plane and the recovery of the bodies.

His agent, Ken Fishkin, said the reporter “has been looking at other opportunities both in and out of TV for a while now.” However, he has not yet landed a new job.

Congi has been a general assignment reporter at WBZ since 2005. She was also informed yesterday that her contract was not being renewed. Rosenfield, a Jamaica Plain native who has been covering the race for Senate in New Hampshire where Scott Brown is challenging incumbent Jean Shaheen, was told a few weeks ago that he wasn’t being be reupped. He is expected to finish up at the station later this week.

Nexstar Station goes with Husband and Wife Anchor Team

Nexstar owned KTAL (Shreveport) announced that Anchor Dan Jovic has joined his Anchor wife Jacque Jovic on the evening news anchor desk.

Jacque and Dan Jovic are co-anchoring NBC 6 News at 5:00, 6:00, and 10 p.m., Monday through Friday.

“I couldn’t be happier to announce this move. Dan has done a superb job in helping to grow the morning show with Stefanie Bryant and Patrick Dennis.  Now he will be able to bring his journalistic skill and personal warmth to NBC 6 news in the evening.  With this move we are strengthening our commitment to serving the ArkLaTex,” said Mark McKay, VP/GM of KTAL.

Dan and Jacque Jovic came to KTAL in October 2012 from Cleveland, OH, where Dan was a reporter and Jacque was a news anchor.  Since coming to the station, Dan has anchored NBC 6 News Today, and Jacque has anchored NBC 6 News at 5:00, 6:00, and 10:00p.

NBC 6 News Director Chris Huston said, “There aren’t very many husband and wife news anchor teams in the country, but the Jovics were an obvious choice to lead NBC 6 News as we continue to bring our viewers local news that matters.   Everywhere I go, I find people responding to both their professionalism and warmth. The Jovics have a rare combination in television news, they are both great journalists, but they are also great people.”

New Addition or a Replacement?

Part time Model and WMTW (Maine) News Anchor Erin Ovalle may have let the cat out of the bag a bit early.

Ovalle posted on her Facebook page that WMTW is hiring Sarah Long as a Weather Anchor.

Station insiders say that Ovalle posted the news before the station had a chance to publicize it themselves.

Others are wondering if Long is an addition to the station, or will she be replacing someone else?

Marrying the Competition

When WOIO (Cleveland) Reporter Ed Gallek met WJW Channel 8 Reporter Peggy Sinkovich, he wouldn't make eye contact.

Now the getting married this weekend.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that love almost didn't get a chance, thanks to a particularly shortsighted moment on Gallek's part.

Cue flashback. Two years ago.

Sinkovich went to work for Channel 8's I-Team in September 2012. One of the I-Team directors said to her, "Do you know Ed Gallek? We want you to be like him."

"So I started looking at his work and thought, 'This guy is really good,' " Sinkovich said. "I wanted to meet him, and one of the photographers at our station worked with him and told me he was a great guy."

A few weeks later, on Nov. 30, she got her chance. Both were assigned to cover the previous night's Cleveland police chase that turned deadly. Both were sitting in a police conference room.

"So my photographer said, 'Go for it. Go over and introduce yourself,' " Sinkovich said. "So I did. And you know what? He never looked up. He was texting on his phone. He never raised his head or anything."

Gallek heard a voice say, "Hi, I'm Peggy. I just started at Fox 8. Your work is great. And I really wanted to meet you."

"I think we met before," he said, still looking at his phone. They hadn't.

How did Sinkovich respond?

"I slunk back to my chair, and then Paul Orlousky came over and said, 'Ed is kind of shy,' " she said. "So it was kind of not a great first meeting. But the second time he came up to me and started talking, and we became friends. Then we started seeing each other at meetings all the time."

Gallek confirms that Sinkovich isn't exaggerating how that first when-Peggy-met-Ed encounter played out.

"I think that would be accurate," he said. "I didn't really look at her. In my defense, it was a huge story, and I was overwhelmed. My mind was going in 100 different directions, although that doesn't excuse my behavior. But I'm glad she gave me a second opportunity. I almost blew a lifetime opportunity to get to know her."

"Sometimes, professionally, our paths cross, but not every day," Gallek said. "If I'm working on the same story as Peggy, then she's a competitor. But personally, she's a soul mate."

There have been some of those "sleeping with the enemy" jokes in their respective newsrooms, of course, but the reporters' romance was quickly accepted at both stations.

"We were dating for a while before people realized it, so there was no, 'Gee, how is this going to work?' " Gallek said. "It already was working. And you hear more of the lighthearted comments from the people you cover. They'll say, 'Well, should I call you first or should I call Peggy?' That kind of thing. But they respect the fact that we keep the personal side separate."

They started dating in July 2013. Facebook friends with Sinkovich, Gallek discovered that she collects old typewriters. He had one at his house and asked her if she was interested. She was.

They announced their engagement a year later.

Like a Chicken with its Head Chopped Off

FTVLive has been telling just how bad the ratings have been for CNBC this year. The cable money net is down in the numbers across the board.

But, don't think for a second they are giving up on hard investigative journalism.

Check out this poll FTVLive spotted on their website:

If this story doesn't have Emmy written all over it, I don't want to live anymore.

Thank Dr. Phil for Giving us Megyn Kelly

Whether you love or hate Fox News Anchor Megyn Kelly, you can thank Dr. Phil for bringing her to TV.

Kelly credits Dr. Phil McGraw with helping her move into TV and a happier marriage.

Kelly was interviewed by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg Tuesday afternoon at the Fortune Most Powerful Women in Business conference in California, where Kelly revealed how she was inspired to leave her job as a high-powered lawyer for a $17,000 job in journalism.

“Back in the day when I was unhappily married and unhappily working, I heard a brilliant man by the name of Dr. Phil say, ‘The only thing between you and someone you envy is that you settled for less,’” said Kelly, who is celebrating her first anniversary in primetime at Fox News.

“I started putting it into practice and it changed my life.”

Kelly, who in 2008 married author Douglas Brunt, also credited a female reporter in Chicago she met in guitar class for helping her get into television.

“In TV, a woman helping another woman break in? Not that common,” Kelly said. “The sisterhood lives.”

Moving the Anchors Around in O-Town

WKMG is shifting some on air talent around and it appears that everyone is getting a chance to do weather.

Traffic reporter Jessica Sanchez departed WKMG-Channel 6 last week, and now the station is changing the roles of other on air talent.  "Julie Broughton (pictured) is our new Monday-through-Friday traffic anchor," WKMG General Manager Skip Valet said Thursday. "We will still use her to forecast the weather from time to time.

"Reporter Kristin Giannas studied climatology and meteorology in college, and she has been continuing her weather education. For now, Kristin will be handling some of our weather shifts."

On Wednesday and Thursday, Giannas did the weather cut-ins during "CBS This Morning."

Can Someone Get Piers Morgan to Shut Up?

I always thought that Howard Kurtz suffered from diarrhea of the mouth, but even Howie can't compete with fired CNN host Piers Morgan.

Morgan has been bitter since the day FTVLive FIRST reported that CNN was going to sack him. He denied our report saying there was no truth to it.

When CNN did fire him, Morgan has not been able to get over it.

He has made all kinds of excuses as to why he was sacked and even blamed his bad ratings on Anderson Cooper.

Today, Piers went on another Twitter rant against CNN and Anderson Cooper still trying to claim his show was great and he never got fired.

Here are his tweets from a short time ago:

Report: NBC Wanted Jon Stewart for Meet The Press

When NBC finally wised up and kicked David Gregory to the curb, Peacock boss Deborah Turness almost went way outside the box with Gregory's replacement.

In the end, she went with the safe (i.e. boring) hire of beltway boy Chuck Todd.

But, Todd was the second choice behind comedian Jon Stewart.

The NY Magazine says that Turness held very quiet negotiations with Stewart about hosting ‘Meet the Press,’ according to three senior television sources with knowledge of the talks.

NY Mag writes, “One source explained that NBC was prepared to offer Stewart virtually ‘anything’ to bring him over. ‘They were ready to back the Brink’s truck up,’ the source said. A spokesperson for NBC declined to comment. James Dixon, Stewart’s agent, did not respond to multiple requests for comment.”

The article goes on to say, “Stewart, whose Comedy Central contract extends through next year, declined NBC’s aggressive courtship. He probably recognized that much of his audience wouldn’t rush to turn on their televisions early on a Sunday morning."

One TV executive emailed FTVLive saying, "the idea that NBC wanted to hire a comedian to host Meet the Press makes perfect sense. NBC News has been a joke for years."

NBC Boss Pulls Out of "Most Powerful Women" Summit

NBC News President Deborah Turness is not having a very good week.

First, a Photographer that NBC News hired has become infected with ebola. Then she got word that ABC's World News Tonight has passed NBC Nightly News for the first time in 5 years. And now word has leaked that Turness first choice to host Meet The Press was comedian Jon Stewart.

Word comes that the NBC boss has pulled out of Fortune’s “Most Powerful Women” summit in California on Monday.

NBC insists Turness reason for not going to the summit, is she is focusing on getting treatment for their Ebola-infected cameraman Ashoka Mukpo.

The rep told Page Six, “Deborah felt it was crucial to stay at NBC News headquarters to focus on the challenges facing our team’s health and safe return. We notified the event organizers last week she had to cancel her travel plans.”

Maybe after a week like that, she isn't feeling so powerful after all.

That Didn't Last Long

When Twitter hired Vivian Schiller from NBC News to be their "Head of News," many wondered if an old media person could fit in the new media world?

Well, the short answer is No.

Schiller took to Twitter to announced her resignation, saying she was stepping aside so the company's new global head of media, Katie Stanton, could "reorganize as she sees fit."

Schiller lasted just under a year and to be honest we're not sure what she did in that year. As far as we know, Twitter still doesn't have a news department.
