Ummmm.... Never Mind

KABC had some breaking news to report. The station said that the LAPD has responded to reports of a single gunshot at a home owned by TV actor Stephen Collins.

Collins has made headlines after the "7th Heaven" star reportedly confessed to molesting multiple children in a taped therapy session.

After KABC broke the news about the single shot fired, they later came back with an update:

"The LAPD responded to reports of a shooting at the location and determined that no shooting had occurred."

Oh....never mind.

Shaking my head.

We Call Bullshit On Memphis Station

Screen Shot 2014-10-07 at 1.18.22 PM.png

After the station got caught with their pants down (pun intended), they tried to blame it on being hacked:

Sorry to say, we don't believe this for 1 second and anyone that does, we have some swamp land down here in Florida you might be interested in.

We totally get that the station needed to try and come up with an excuse, but the truth might have been the best option here.

Just saying....

Headed to Houston

WOAI/KABB (San Antonio) Anchor/Reporter Grace White is on the move, but saying in the Lone Star State.

White is returning her hometown of Houston and a gig at KHOU.

"Thrilled to join the team at KHOU! It's always been a dream to work in my hometown," White told mikemcguff.com. "Looking forward to reporting and having the chance to fill-in anchor at a station I grew up watching."

“Leaving San Antonio is so bittersweet," White said. "It’s been five wonderful years here and I’m truly grateful to my WOAI and KABB family for the opportunities they gave me.

Former Newsie Starts PR Company

After you retire from TV news, you really aren't qualified to do much else, so what do you do?

You go into PR.

Former WCPO (Cincinnati) Anchor Clyde Gray is doing that, with the launch of his new company  called CGA Public Relations Strategies. The CGA stands for Clyde Gray and Associates (I'm sure the company worked months on the name).

"This is just the start, and there's more that we hope to accomplish," Gray told WCPO.

In a news release issued about the company's launch, Gray said CGA will focus on creating and implementing public relations strategies, especially related to clients' diversity efforts. The company also will help individuals, corporations and governments in Greater Cincinnati manage their interactions with the news media, particularly when the news is bad. The firm will pursue consulting with political candidates, too, Gray said.

First rule of PR? Get your old station to do a fluff piece on your new company.

Sorry..... That's Some Really Old News

Another TV website just reported that they obtained an internal memo from Fox Television Stations CEO Jack Abernethy.

In the memo, Abernethy told staffers when Fox takes over KTVU in the next few days, the new News Director will be Dana Hahn from WTTG in Washington, DC.

That would be a pretty big scoop, if FTVLive had not already reported that same story last month.

The site did not mention that FTVLive was FIRST to report that news.

Just saying...

Here's the link from our story on September 22nd.

Weather Channel Boss: I Love Fucking Science

Sources tell FTVLive that Weather Channel President David Clark sent this email yesterday morning to the entire company about a website he liked.

The subject line of the email "I Love Fucking Science".

At least one staffer was not very happy to open their inbox to an F-Bomb. You must remember, The Weather Channel is based in Georgia, home of many a good christian.

Here is a screen shot of Clark's email with a couple of replies:

Fired Employee Sues CNN for $5 Million

Yesterday, FTVLive told you that CNN had settles a lawsuit brought on by a former employee that liked to wear bright colored mariachi outfits and track suits in the newsroom.

Now, another former CNN staffer is suing the company for $5 million bucks in a wrongful termination suit.

Deadline reports that Stanley Wilson worked as field producer and writer of news and documentaries, covering stories including 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and elections and contributing to such programs as Black In America and Homicide In Hollenbeck.

In the suit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, Wilson claims that Peter Janos, who served as his immediate or general supervisor for his entire 17 years at CNN, “never liked Plaintiff and never wanted him at the [Los Angeles] bureau because of Plaintiff’s protected characteristics, including his race, color and ancestry, among other things.”

Wilson was promoted only once during his tenure at CNN, in 2003, despite applying for a dozen job openings. According to the suit, “In 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, Plaintiff verbally complained to the CNN Senior Vice-President of Human Resources (HR) that African-American men outside of Atlanta, D.C., and New York were not being promoted.

Janos, who also is a defendant in the suit along with Turner Broadcasting and Turner Services, was promoted to VP and Bureau Chief in 2013. Wilson’s wife gave birth to twins in September 2013, and Wilson took a five-week paternity leave. Soon before his leave began, Wilson learned that “Janos had promoted a much younger, less-experienced Caucasian individual to the position of producer, replacing a Los Angeles-based senior producer who Janos had promoted,” according to the suit. Wilson claims the new guy got the plum assignments, while the plaintiff “was frequently relegated to in-house packaging and fill-in work on the Assignment Desk.”

Wilson was assigned to cover a story in early January, and the suit claims that there was a question of attribution regarding three sentences. The story was pulled — which according to the suit, “was the pretext Janos needed to terminate Plaintiff’s employment.” On January 9, Wilson was placed on leave and told that “CNN was conducting an audit of the entirely of Plaintiff’s work.” He was terminated January 28.

The Internal Turner Memo About Massive Job Cuts

Yesterday, FTVLive told you that Turner CEO John Martin sent out an internal memo to the employees, telling them that they plan on cutting almost 1500 jobs across Turner properties.

CNN is expected to lop off 300 jobs alone, which is almost double than what was original expected.

Here is the internal memo that was sent out:

Today we are announcing that position eliminations identified through the Turner 2020 initiative will impact roughly 10 percent of the company’s current full-time global workforce of some 14,000. The approximately 1,475 impacted roles are at all levels of the company’s news, entertainment, kids, young adult and sports networks and businesses, as well as corporate functions, in 18 Turner locations around the world. Our colleagues whose positions are directly impacted will be advised over the next two weeks.

Those whose jobs are impacted will receive every consideration and the respect they are due, starting with severance pay for transition. Whatever their job title, business unit or location, they have contributed to the success story that is Turner Broadcasting, and they leave with our thanks and sincere best wishes.

We’ve known since we announced Turner 2020 in June that a close review of structures would likely identify redundancies and areas where our people resources are not optimally assigned. That doesn’t make it any easier to see people we value as colleagues and friends exit the company. It’s our responsibility as business leaders to focus Turner’s talent pool where individuals and groups will deliver the greatest return for the company, for Time Warner and for our shareholders. I also feel a responsibility to see that we are creating meaningful professional opportunities and ways for people to lead, succeed and grow. So the employee component of the larger Turner 2020 project has received careful consideration.

Let me address, again, any lingering concerns over Turner’s profile in the Atlanta community: Atlanta remains the company’s largest employee base, with more than 5,500 full-time employees even after this force reduction. That positions Turner among the top 25 Metro Atlanta employers on a headcount basis. Beyond people and infrastructure, our history and heritage are there. So is a big part of our future.

I appreciate your focus and professionalism over the recent months. I’m asking for more of the same in the weeks ahead, as responsibilities and teams shift across our company. This process is not without challenges, but out of it will come new energy and momentum. I remain certain of its necessity and the positive impact it will have on our ability to reach the goals we have set to secure a healthy, productive and growing future for Turner Broadcasting.

Going Dark in AC

Yesterday, FTVLive FIRST reported that WMGM in Atlantic City is going to go dark at the end of the year.

The local AC newspaper contacted FTVLive for more info on the story, telling us that the station is denying our report.

Of course, this station is issued a number of denials in the past that turned out to be false. FTVLive stands by our source and our story.

Adding to that story, sources tell FTVLive that WMGM employees will get their "settlement package" (the company's term), based on years of service, by January 15, 2015.

Stay tuned....

Because, You Know..... Moms Can't Do that

KBOI (Boise) Anchor Rick Douglas doesn't seem to think much of single Moms. Douglas posted a tweet about swimmer Michael Phelps being suspended from competition after being arrested for DUI.

It is well publicized that Phelps was raised by his single mother and according to Douglas in a reply to his tweet, not having a Dad around is what has led to Phelps problems out of the pool.

Someone needs to tell Douglas that there are a number of kids raised by single Moms that have turned out fine and never had a brush with the law.

The Sexiest News Anchor Alive

People Magazine is on a search for the "sexiest news anchor alive".

The magazine writes:

We're weeks away from revealing this year's hot Hollywood guy, but before that, we want your help finding the hottest guys in your neighborhood – namely, your local news anchors. We're interested in the men who read the news or the sports headlines, or those who do the weather. Anyone who sits behind the news desk is eligible.

FTVLive was going to nominate Wolf Blitzer, but then we realized that the contest rules said, "local news anchor" and "alive".

Wolf missing on both those.
