Granite Goes out on the Bottom in Buffalo

Sometime in the next few weeks, Scripps will takeover WKBW in Buffalo from Granite Broadcasting.

In their last book as station owner, the Granite station finished dead last in the ratings. The first hour of their morning newscast pulling barely a one rating.

Scripps is going to have a lot of work to do, bringing the station back from the dead.

As for the rest of the ratings, WIVB finished in first place at 6 p.m. for the first time in six sweeps periods.

WIVB averaged a 9.9 at 6 p.m., WGRZ finishes a close second with a 9.3.

It was a good book for WIVB. The station tied for first at 5 a.m. with WGRZ and won at noon, 6 p.m., 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. It improved or tied its ratings in every news time period but at 11 p.m., where it dropped slightly but stayed a big No.1.

WGRZ tied at 5 a.m. and won at 6 a.m., 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Its ratings were flat or lower everywhere but at 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. from a year ago.

WKBW dragged the ratings bottom across the board.

Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out Granite.

Shuffling Off from Buffalo

Speaking of WIVB in Buffalo....

News Anchor Diana Fairbanks is leaving the station in about a month to return to Traverse City, Mich.

News Director Joe Schlaerth announced the move this morning in a memo to the staff.

"We're very sorry to see Diana leave," said General Manager Rene LaSpina. "I wish her much luck in the future."

Fairbanks isn't leaving for another broadcasting job.

"She's making the move because of her husband's job opportunity," said LaSpina.

Schlaerth's memo said Fairbanks' husband, Brian Lawson, received an "excellent opportunity" at a resort he used to work at and the "family is moving back home to the place they called home for more than a dozen years."

Fairbanks arrived at WIVB from Traverse City in January of 2012 to become the 5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. news anchor.

Cops Say Fox News Anchor was "Very Intoxicated"

Early this morning, Fox News Anchor Gregg Jarrett bonded out of a Minneapolis jail after posting a $300 bond.

Jarrett was busted by police after an employee at an airport lounge called police to say Jarrett “appeared to be acting very intoxicated,” according to police.

Officers responded and found Jarrett to be “uncooperative, resistant and combative” during his arrest.

Jarrett, who calls the New York City has yet to respond to telephone and e-mail messages seeking comment about his arrest or reveal why he was in Minnesota while on leave from work.

A network spokeswoman said in a statement from Fox headquarters in New York that “we were made aware late last night that Gregg Jarrett was arrested in Minneapolis yesterday and charged with a misdemeanor. He is dealing with serious personal issues at this time. A date at which Gregg might return to air has yet to be determined.”

FTVLive posted video in April of what appeared to be a drunk Jarrett anchoring on air.

He has not been seen on FNC's air since April and Fox News says that he requested a leave of absence from the network.

Huh?

Well that didn't take long.

This week CNN Tonight started airing at 10PM and already it's being preempted.

Is CNN pulling the plug on CNN Tonight to air a special report on the VA Hospital problems?

Nope.

So it must be the trouble in Taiwan?

Wrong again.

CNN Tonight will be preempted so CNN can run their documentary "Blackfish" one more time. The same show that CNN first aired last year will take the place of CNN Tonight.

WTF?!

Just Like FTVLive Said would Happen

Back on December 5th of last year, FTVLive wrote:

"When Jeff Zucker became the President of CNN, he said that he would work out of New York instead of Atlanta, where CNN was based.

Now word is that Zucker is telling talent it's time to come join him in New York.

To get around some of the unions, shows will still be produced out of Atlanta, but they will air from NYC."

Today CNN announced that later this summer, Brooke Baldwin and Carol Costello move from Atlanta and  anchor 'CNN Newsroom' from NYC.

“Carol Costello and Brooke Baldwin will move to New York to anchor their weekday CNN Newsroom shows, beginning in August. There will be no other changes to those shows’ production team,” a CNN spokesperson told TVNewser.

Just as FTVLive FIRST reported many of the shows will still be produced out of Atlanta.

One CNN staffer tells FTVLive "I've never seen such an unhappy bunch who are all feverishly looking to leave the company."

It was a Tight One in Orlando

The May book is a wrap and the ratings race in Orlando is as close as can be.

At 6 p.m. weekdays, WESH beat WFTV by 28 viewers -- 28 viewers in the 25-to-54 age group that is most important to news advertisers.

At 6AM the race was even closer. WESH beats WFTV by jus 16 viewers in the demo.

Of course you just know that WESH will have promos on the air by the end of the day claiming they are number 1.

In reality, it is a dead heat.

At 11PM WFTV pulls out a victory. WFTV averaged 29,179 viewers to WESH's 26,894, WKMG's 21,897 and WOFL's 18,115.

Fox News Anchor Gregg Jarrett Arrested (Updated)

Back in April, FTVLive posted video of Fox News Anchor Gregg Jarrett, slurring his speech on the air.

Many thought Jarrett was drunk while anchoring the news.

Not long after that episode, Fox News announced that Jarrett “requested time off for personal reasons."

Now, Jarrett has been busted by police at the Minneapolis airport.

An airport spokesman says police arrested Jarrett after cops were called to Northern Lights Grill in Terminal One on Wednesday.

Police say when they got there, they say Jarrett appeared to be drunk  acted belligerent and refused to follow orders.

They took him to the Hennepin County Jail, where his bond was set at $300. Jarrett's charged with interfering with a peace officer.

Update: This is the statement released by Fox News:

"We were made aware late last night that Gregg Jarrett was arrested in Minneapolis yesterday and charged with a misdemeanor. He is dealing with serious personal issues at this time. A date at which Gregg might return to air has yet to be determined."

NYU Professor Says TV Weather Anchor Need to Straighten Up

Jonathan Zimmerman, a professor for New York University writes a piece in the Baltimore Sun taking Weather Anchors to task for goofing off and not doing the weather. He writes:

In the United States, weathercasters serve as our goofy national soothsayers — screwballs who don ridiculous hats and deliver wacky one-liners. But they're also trusted oracles who employ the latest scientific wizardry to divine the mysteries of the skies.

So why won't they discuss the science of climate change? According to the American Meteorological Society, we have "unequivocal evidence" that "human activities"— especially the burning of fossil fuels — have changed the earth's climate since the 1950s. But you rarely hear a weathercaster acknowledge it on the air.

Zimmerman ends his piece with:

The relaxed, cheery atmosphere of modern weather reporting prevents informed weathercasters from addressing climate change with the gravity it deserves. To be fair, some of them do mention global warming when discussing hurricanes and other emergencies. But it's hard to find room for that when half of their air time is taken up with humorous chit-chat. And it's hard to take them seriously when their job is to make you laugh.

Nobody is better positioned to teach the public about human-made climate change than our nightly weather reporters. But we'll have to change the climate of their reporting first.

Chicago Anchor Goes Back Under the Knife

This is not how you want to celebrate the end of the May book.

WLS Anchor Linda Yu ends the book and heads back to the operating room.

The veteran Chicago news anchor, who recently marked her 30th anniversary at ABC O&O will undergo a third surgery Thursday to repair a broken leg she suffered in a traffic accident while vacationing in Florida last January.

Yu, 67, will be off indefinitely from the 4 p.m. weekday newscast she co-anchors with Alan Krashesky.

“She’s been doing very well – this is just a pause on the road to full recovery,” ABC 7 reported on its  Facebook page Wednesday. “Linda is expected to be back on the air very soon!”

Earlier this year, Yu was sidelined for a month after the accident. She returned to work full-time with the aid of a walker and wheelchair while still undergoing physical therapy.

Ever the optimist, Yu told Facebook fans: “Hope to see you again soon . . . at fourrrrr!”

FTVLive wishes Yu the best.
