Time's Joe Klein: CNN is an Embarrassment to Our Profession

This morning, FTVLive told you that a website that was devoted to covering CNN had shutdown because Jeff Zucker has chosen a direction for the network that the blog simply isn't interested in documenting.

Now you can add Time magazine's Joe Klein to the list of people turning away from CNN.

Klein says he used to watch CNN, but he doesn't anymore thanks to Zucker and the direction of the network.

“It is such an embarrassment to our profession that CNN has gone in the toilet the way it has,” Klein said in a sit down with Jeff Greenfield over the weekend.

So where does he turn now? Fox News.

“I miss being able to watch a straight newscast, and it turns out the only place you can go to get one at 6 o’clock at night is Fox,” Klein said.

Houston Station Hires Its First MMJ

KTRK in Houston stuck it out as long as they could, but the station finally buckled and hired their first MMJ.

Steve Campion joins KTRK from WBBHFort Myers where he has worked for almost three years.

Campion's hiring is KTRK's first plunge into the MMJ, one-man band, backpack journalist, cheap money saver (whatever you want to call it).

The station was the last in Houston to embrace the inevitable future in this area.

Before WBBH, Campion worked as an MMJ for WCJB/TV20 News in Gainesville, FL for a little more than a year. He interned at WTVJ NBC Miami in 2009.

NY Station Wasted Viewer's Time with Proposal

NY Station Wasted Viewer's Time with Proposal

WPIX in New York has been struggling in the ratings and now we have a good reason why that is.

The station decided to waste viewers time by showing video of Reporter Kristin Cole's boyfriend's marriage proposal.

These on air or on video proposals are one of FTVLive's biggest pet peeves.

We think it is only fair that if the newscast is going to take time out for this crap, they should also report when a Reporter or Anchor gets divorced and share the details.

The video was up after the jump.

CNN Fan Site Loses Faith and is Shutting Down

The CNN fan site blog "All Things CNN" has given up on Jeff Zucker and his vision for the cable network.

The blog writes:

We've tried our best to give CNN a chance to recapture our attention but we've finally come to the realization that they have chosen a direction for the network that we simply aren't interested in documenting.  So for now, and the foreseeable future, we are no longer going to be updating All Things CNN or publishing comments to this blog. The archives will remain accessible and our email account will remain active if anyone is interested in acquiring this blog.

In the words of Ted Turner 'There's no point in sittin' around and cryin' about spilt milk. Gotta move on.'

LIN Sees Revenue Climb

Unknown.jpeg

Do you work at LIN station?

If you do, today is the day to go in an ask for a raise.

LIN reported their 1st quarter earnings and it included an 18% gain in net revenue to $166.2 million, compared to $141 million in the first quarter of 2013.

Local revenues, which include net local advertising revenues, retransmission consent fee revenues and television station website revenues, increased 9% to $108.1 million compared to $99.4 million in the first quarter of 2013.

So in other words, if you're boss says he can't afford to give you a raise?

He's lying.....

Back on the Air in Salt Lake City

Back in October of 2008, FTVLive told you that KTVX in Salt Lake City had yanked longtime news anchor Randall Carlisle off the air.

The station decided not to renew his contract and never gave a reason as to why.

Fast forward to 2014 and who does KTVX hire as they new Anchor?

Randall Carlisle.

Carlisle will anchor and lead ABC4 Utah’s weekend newscasts beginning May 10th.

“It’s great to have a journalist of Randall’s depth, experience and quality added to our Good4Utah news team,” says Richard Doutre` Jones, ABC4 Utah and CW30 Vice President and General Manager. “His love for Utah and his passion and feel for the news is truly genuine.”

“Randall is one of the best journalists I’ve had the pleasure to work alongside. He’s great under pressure,” says George Severson, ABC4 Utah and CW30 News Director. “Having him back in the newsroom and behind the weekend news desk is really a good thing for Utah viewers. Randall’s presence on the weekend news reflects our commitment to providing accurate, engaging and fair news coverage for all Utahns.”

Sounds like the station is really excited to have Carlisle at the station. So why the hell did they sack him in the first place?

Gots to love TV news.

The Nightmare is Almost over for Buffalo Station

If all goes as planned, WKBW should have a new owner before the next rating book.

The one once powerful highly rated station that had been run into the ground by Granite Broadcasting and longtime General Manager Bill Ransom, is about to be taken over by Scripps.

Current General Manager Mike Nurse said this week that the Federal Communications Commission is expected to rule on the sale of the station any day now.

If the sale of WKBW-TV to Scripps is approved as expected, the Cincinnati-based company is expected to take control by the end of May.

It generally takes three or fourth weeks to close the sale after FCC approval, which would mean Scripps would take over after the end of the May sweeps.

Scripps officials probably would prefer taking over after the May sweeps so the results -- which haven't been favorable to the ABC affiliate for years -- won't fall under the company's watch. Channel 7 is deep in third place in local news ratings. The ratings for ABC's top-rated news programs "Good Morning America" and "World News with Diane Sawyer" are also third in this market.

The first sweeps period of significance for Scripps would be in November, by which time it might implement some of its plans to try and restore the station to its former glory.

Scripps isn't allowed to share its plans yet, but the company is expected to do the typical things new owners do like change the set of the newscast and take a research survey to judge the popularity of the station's on-air staff.

It is believed that Channel 7 hasn't taken such a comprehensive research survey in about 15 years.

Signing off in DC

WTTG Reporter Karen Gray Houston's bio on the station's website starts out "I can hardly believe I get paid to do this job. I mean, really, getting out all over the metro area, meeting interesting people, finding out about news as soon as it happens and telling all my TV friends."

Soon she won't be getting paid, at least by the Fox O&O.

Houston is signing off from the station on Wednesday after more then 19 years.

She broke the news on Twitter:

Rick Sanchez wants to be the Next Bill Maher

Former cable news Anchor Rick Sanchez is returning to TV and he wants to be the Latino's answer to Jon Stewart and/or Bill Maher!

Sanchez show is coming  to Miami-based Mira TV May 5 with a nightly, hour-long talk/news show modeled after politically-engaged news entertainment fares.

From what Sanchez says, the format is Bill Maher meets Jon Stewart – in Miami-style Spanglish.

“It’s something that nobody has tried on Spanish television,” says Sanchez, who’ll continue his daily two-hour late morning talk show on radio’s WIOD-610AM. “There’s a space between news, which is very traditional on Spanish TV, and entertainment, which is audacious. That’s the gap we’ll try to fill.”

Don’t expect scantily-clad ladies, a staple of spanish TV though.

“Nah, we don’t do that,” said the former anchor, who was canned from CNN in 2010 after being accused of claiming that Jews own the media.

Executive producer Fernando Ferro, a 25-year-old TV whiz who’s been directing Venezuela soap operas for two years, said he and the always-outspoken Sanchez have been working on the idea for more than a year.

“When the show opens, it’ll be Rick’s monologue, with humor and passion,” Ferro said. “Then there’ll be a panel discussion, just like (HBO’s) Real Time with Bill Maher. We’ll end with a video reporter on the street or Rick interviewing a famous personality.”

There won’t be a studio audience at first, although Ferro says he’s using a cheering and laughing track.

At first, the show will air in Miami, Tampa and Orlando, with an option for New York. Ferro says Mira is committed to airing the show, titled "Rick Sanchez", for a year.

And since Sanchez’ perspective is on the right, and Ferro’s is on the left alongside their mentor Maher, he says the show will probably leave viewers feeling somewhere in the middle.

CNN Promised to Make Chicago Mayor Look Good

The Chicago Tribune writes that if it seemed as though some scenes of CNN's documentary series "Chicagoland" were coordinated by Mayor Rahm Emanuel's City Hall and the show's producers, that's because they were.

More than 700 emails reviewed by the Tribune reveal that the production team worked hand in hand with the mayor's advisers to develop storylines, arrange specific camera shots and review news releases officially announcing the show.

Producers asked the mayor's office to help them set up key interactions in what the cable network has billed as a nonscripted eight-part series, including Emanuel's visits with the school principal who emerged as a star of the show, emails show.

CNN has yet to comment on the Tribune's report, but it appears that this another black eye for CNN head Jeff Zucker.

Even worse news for CNN, Chicagoland was a ratings flop for the cable net. The show's season finale finale drew 325,000 total viewers — a series low — and 132,000 adults 25-54 in its 10 PM slot.

he show got trounced by both Fox News and MSNBC.

Another Fox News Anchor Tees off on Colbert

Bill O'Reilly isn't the only one at Fox News taking shots at Stephen Colbert.

HuffPo says that over the weekend, FNC's Eric Bolling fired back at the Comedy Central host after Colbert mocked comments Bolling made about Earth Day earlier that week. Bolling said Monday that he celebrates Earth Day by blasting the heat or air conditioning and sparking up the barbecue, to which Colbert later teased, "I would hate to be the dumbass who has to pay this guy's utility bills."

Bolling did not find the joke funny.

"I'd hate to be the dumbass that has to watch your so-called comedy show," he said. "Perhaps you might want to take a comedy lesson before you take over for David Letterman. I mean, if you can't tell a joke when you hear one, I can't imagine you'll be able to deliver them on 'The Late Show.'"

We have a feeling that Colbert will be fine.

Al Sharpton: We Are Prepared to Rally against the NBA

MSNBC host Al Sharpton is ready to take some time out of working on his show on the cable net, to take on the NBA.

Sharpton is ready to rally the NBA to strip the L.A. Clippers from owner Donald Sterling over racist remarks he made to his girlfriend.

"No one should be allowed to own a team if they have in fact engaged in this kind of racial language," Sharpton said.

He then added "We are prepared at National Action Network to rally in front of the NBA headquarters if this matter is not immediately dealt with."

Sterling is accused of making racist remarks saying he is bothered by her associating with black people and posting pictures with them on Instagram.

LA Anchor Meets His Biological Mom

KTLA Chris Schauble grew up as the only African American child in an all white family, KTLA Morning News anchor Chris Schauble says his adoption was obvious, but so was the unconditional love of his family.

"My mom is a PhD. My dad, God rest his soul, was a master's degree holder," Schauble says. "They were well-educated people who valued life. In 1970 they decided to adopt, and I was that kid."

Still, at 44 years old, Schauble felt his biological mom and dad were still the missing piece of his personal puzzle.

And being that it is the May book, what better time than right now to meet his Mom for the first time:

Miami Reporter Dodges Frying Pan Tossed His Way

WPLG Reporter Jeff Weinsier was on the "dirty dining' beat for the station.

When he stopped by a pizza place that didn't have a very good inspection report, a frying pan came his way.

And we're going to bet, judging by the inspection report that the pizza place just picked the frying pan off the floor and used it.

Let's go to the video:
