FORE! FTVLive Programing Note

Screen Shot 2014-01-22 at 9.45.58 AM.png

Today is my Christmas, my CES, My NAB all wrapped up into one.

While many of you are reading this, I'm on my way (or already there) to Orlando and the annual PGA Golf Show at the Orlando Convention Center.

This is without a doubt my favorite day of the year.

The PGA Show takes up the convention center and is wall to wall with golf clubs, bags, clothes and equipment and I run around like a little kid on Christmas morning trying to see it all.

So, while I'm at the PGA Show it means that the FTVLive World Headquarters will be dark for the next few hours.

Plan your day accordingly and we will see you right back here when we return.

CNN's Zucker Holds All Hands on Deck Meeting

Jeff Zucker

Jeff Zucker

Back on January 10th, FTVLive FIRST told you that CNN boss Jeff Zucker was going to hold a town hall meeting on January 22nd for all CNN staffers worldwide.

Yesterday, the meeting happened and despite a bad first year for Zucker, he did his best to paint a rosy picture for the staff.

Zucker spun his accomplishments as best he could.

The NY Daily News says that he claimed CNN passed MSNBC in the ratings to be the No. 2 cable news network; growth at HLN; CNN.com's best year ever, and CNN International’s record number of awards.

Zucker also said CNN will continue to experiment with its daytime programming and that changes are in store for prime time, too — but he declined to be specific.

Stay tuned.....

The Future of Glass in the TV Newsroom

Google-Glass.jpg

As we have told you, FTVLive has been wearing Google Glass for the past few weeks.

For those that don't know, Glass is wearable technology that should be released by Google later this year. The more we wear Glass, the more we can see that wearable tech (on the face, or wrist) is defiantly part of the future.

But, what will be the future of Glass in TV news?

FTVLive asked news and technology expert Michael Rosenblum to give us his take on Glass and its future in TV news.

The story is posted in FTV Tech

Reorganizing the Top at Journal Broadcasting

Reorganizing the Top at Journal Broadcasting

Journal Broadcasting is shifting around top managers as they move the company away from its "regional alignment" structure and toward expanding the company's "two main businesses: Television and Radio."

The Milwaukee Journal reports that the changes were announced in a memo released Tuesday by Andre Fernandez, president and CFO of Journal Communications.

As a result, the company is "realigning" its senior leadership teams. It also splits responsibilities for its broadcast operations between executives in Milwaukee and Nashville, Tenn.

In his announcement, Fernandez said that as the company has expanded its footprint beyond Wisconsin, its internal organizational structure evolved to a "regional alignment."

While this was "optimal for a smaller group, we believe that current and future growth will demand a more singular, focused approach to managing" TV and radio operations "in order for each to advance its strategic objections and reach its full operational potential.

More after the leap.

Bianca Castro

Bianca Castro

WFTV in Orlando announced several weeks ago that anchor-reporter Bianca Castro was leaving.

But the station didn't know where she was going.

Castro revealed this week that she is headed to NBC O&O KXAS in Dallas and that she will anchor at 4 p.m. and report, WFTV news director Matt Parcell said Wednesday.

Castro's last day at WFTV will be Feb. 21.

She has strong ties to Texas: She grew up in Plano and worked in Waco and Corpus Christi. Her WFTV bio reads: "During college, I interned at WFAA in Dallas and was hooked! I graduated from Baylor University (sic 'em Bears!), where I met my husband."

She stared at WFTV in 2010.

That's One Busy Bug

cnbcbugpt.png

Remember not that long ago when stations and networks did not have the bug at the bottom of the screen?

Now it is hard to find a station/network that doesn't have a bug.

The bug has evolved over the years. It started out as static and transparent in the lower corner. Then it started getting much more opaque and sometimes animated.

The gang at NewscastStudio has noticed that the bug on CNBC is pulling triple duty.

The bug identifies the network, touts its 25th anniversary and showing off the Olympic rings.

That my friends, is one very busy bug.

Vegas Station Owner Gets Good News in Cancer Fight

Jim Rogers

Jim Rogers

Back on January 6th, FTVLive told you that KSNV (Las Vegas) station owner Jim Rogers announced to the staff he was in a second battle with cancer.

The Las Vegas Review Journal reports that Rogers got some news he’s been praying for: His cancer is in remission and a scheduled surgery has been canceled, according to KSNV-TV general manager Lisa Howfield and Bob Stoldal, executive vice president of news.

Rogers, who informed his employees late last year during a Channel 3 newsroom meeting that he was facing a new cancer challenge, received the update Tuesday while visiting his oncologist.

He had undergone chemo and radiation, according to KSNV-TV general manager Howfield and Stoldal.

Rogers told Howfield and Stoldal, “one of the greatest things out of this is now I can go to the Final Four.” He has been attending the NCAA championship for decades.

“He said, ‘I’ve returned to my normal abnormal self,’” Howfield said.

Former Houston News Director Dick John is Dead

Dick John

Dick John

Dick John, one of the people responsible for building the KHOU news department, has died at age 84. Former KHOU 11 reporter Fred Rhodes (1977 to 1979) tells me John died yesterday.

"He was known for his gentlemanly demeanor and for encouraging young reporters," Rhodes told me. "He was a kind soul and consummate pro."

John was KHOU's news director from 1968 to 75. He hired big names like Jessica Savitch, Linda Ellerbee, Ron Franklin and Dennis Murphy before their network days.

He also brought KPRC 2 anchor Bill Balleza to Houston.

"Dick hired me in June of 1973 to work at KHOU," Balleza told mikemcguff.com. "I had been reporting for KRON-TV in San Francisco and wanted to get back to Texas. He took me to lunch at the old Warwick Hotel where we sealed the deal. I recalled telling him that I planned to be in Houston no longer than two years. He reminded me a few months ago that two years can stretch into forty in the blink of an eye."

Before KHOU, John worked for ABC News from 1958 to 1959.
