We Rather Not...... Sorry Dan

dan_gun.jpg

Poor Dan Rather, he continues to get less and less relevant with each passing year.

The one time CBS Anchor was holding out hope that the network might ring him up to pitch in with CBS's coverage of the 50th-anniversary coverage of the Kennedy assassination.

Rather waited by the phone, but the call never came.

"I held off doing anything for anybody else for a while, thinking I may be asked to do something (for CBS)," Rather said. "I can't say I had any reason for that hope."

Rather helped organize CBS' plans for President John F. Kennedy's visit to Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963, and as a young reporter was a key component of assassination coverage.

Now 82, he's one of the few reporters on the story that day who's still active in journalism.

He will get the consolation prize of appearing on NBC's "Today" show on Nov. 22, where he might have to explain to Carson Daly who he is.

Nice Pants

Screen Shot 2013-11-05 at 8.05.30 AM.png

The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore was featured on this month's Golf Digest. The "Can Man" admits he's not a very good golfer but he loves the game and uses golf to give back to some of his favorite charities.

Cantore says he plays in as many charity events as he can, for favorite causes. including raising cash for research to combat Fragile X syndrome, which affects his two children.

Cantore hopes to host a tournament eventually.

Let's hope he can find a better pair of pants before he does that.

Attorney General Says that DC Anchor Knew About Scheme

jc-hayward-edited.jpg

WUSA Anchor JC Hayward remains on "administrative leave" after being accused of her involvement in a scheme.

The Attorney General claims in court documents that Hayward served as a paid consultant for one of two companies involved in a scheme to divert millions of taxpayer dollars from Options Public Charter School.

Hayward's lawyer tried to get his client dismissed from the case claiming that "not only did not benefit financially from the alleged scheme but was entirely unaware of its existence.”

The AG says Hayward was involved and claims she knew.

In the document, the D.C. Office of the Attorney General argues that Hayward should not be removed from a case that implicated former managers of Options in an alleged self-dealing scheme. A civil complaint filed in October said that the managers funneled at least $3 million to two for-profit companies they ran, and the complaint named Hayward as a defendant in her role as chairwoman of the school’s board of trustees.

Hayward declined to comment when reached by telephone Monday evening. “I really don’t want to respond to anything right now,” Hayward said.

Hayward’s lawyer, Jeffrey S. Jacobovitz, said prosecutors told him Hayward received “a negligible amount of money” from the company and that the payments were approved by lawyers.

Hayward's website which featured photographs of an Options board meeting she hosted at her home, has not been updated since Oct. 1.

Cox Tries to Spin Internal Memo Story

20130430033444!WHIO-TV_Logo.png

Earlier, FTVLive told you about an internal memo sent to the staff at the Dayton Daily News, telling ten not to publish stories that are critical of WHIO-TV in Dayton. Both properties work under the same roof and are owned by Cox.

The memo sent by Rashida Rawls, a Cox editor, told the staff. "We do not want to run any stories that cast our station in a negative light or even allude to it negatively."

Now Cox Spokesperson Michael Athmer is doing the best spin job that he can.

Athmer tells The Wrap that “We are addressing this with our staff so messages like this don’t happen again.”

In other words, tell the staff personally when you want to censor the news and don't write it in an email.

Do you work at a Nexstar Station? Ask for a Raise!

nexstar_logo.png

If you are working at a Nexstar station, Today is the day to go into the boss and demand a raise.

The company reported their 3rd quarter earnings and revenue is up 40%.

Nexstar's net revenue grew to $125.8 million compared to the year-earlier quarter’s $90 million.

Perry Sook, Nexstar CEO said: “Nexstar’s record third quarter financial results reflect contributions from recently completed accretive station acquisitions as well as our revenue diversification initiatives and success in generating new local direct advertising.

In other words the company is raking it in.

Now go in there and demand that raise you so rich deserve.

Censoring The News

20130430033444!WHIO-TV_Logo.png

FTVLive has told you about the relationship between the Dayton Daily News and WHIO, which a both owned and operated by Cox.

The TV station and the newspaper have merged operations in an effort to cut costs and streamline operations.

Now, according to an internal memo, the Dayton Daily News is going to start censoring the news when it comes to negative stories about WHIO and CBS, which WHIO is an affiliate.

Rashida Rawls, a Cox editor, sent the memo below after the News ran this review of the fall TV season, picked up from the Minneapolis Star Tribune:

Hi all,

The wire filler story on D2 of today’s Life section cast all of the TV networks, including CBS, in a negative light. Our news station – WHIO-TV is a CBS-affiliate station. We do not want to run any stories that cast our station in a negative light or even allude to it negatively.

I know we’re working really hard – and very quickly – to do the very best in selecting wire stories. But I wanted to bring this to our attention so that we can be more careful in selecting nondaily wire copy and in our editing and/or selection of stories that contain references to CBS. Remember, we are better together.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks.
 Rashida Rawls

Memos like this make me sick to my stomach, If you ever wanted a reason we duel ownerships and news partnerships are wrong, it's all in that memo posted above.

Another Anchor Change at KNBC

Screen Shot 2013-11-05 at 6.23.00 AM.png

KNBC has been spending the past month blowing up their morning show and starting over.

Yesterday, former Weather Channel Meteorologist  Crystal Egger (pictured) took over on the morning show.

FTVLive FIRST reported back in September that Egger was leaving TWC for KNBC and its morning show.

Egger takes over the morning weather duties from Elita Loresca. With Loresca off the show, it makes it a clean sweep of the anchor team at KNBC in the mornings.

The station sacked News Anchor Alycia Lane and Traffic Reporter Sean Murphy last month.

No word yet if anymore changes are expected among the anchor ranks at the station. We would called KNBC's Spokesperson for a comment.

But you know.

Blame the Intern

Screen Shot 2013-11-05 at 5.43.49 AM.png

WFMZ (Allentown) reported the news that Comedian Phyllis Diller had died on Monday at the age of 95.

The problem was that Diller died over a year ago on August 20, 2012.

The news of Diller's death came up on WFMZ's timeline on their Facebook page. Many that stopped by the page ridiculed the station for being so late with the news.

WFMZ posted two different messages on the story, putting the blame on Facebook (see screen grab above).

But, the published date was dated yesterday before it was changed to August 2012.

The station is still blaming Facebook, but some say that the station is using the Facebook excuse to cover up for their mistake.

Either way, last we checked, Phyllis Diller remains very much dead.

Buying the News

Buying the News

It appears that during the rating book, NBC has no problem opening up the checkbook to buy a good story.

The Washington Post says that in a second episode of apparent “checkbook journalism” in a week, NBC News has locked up exclusive interviews and amateur footage of an aerial accident with a six-figure fee to a group of sky divers who survived the collision of their two small planes.

NBC’s news division has agreed to compensate the nine sky divers and two pilots who were involved in the accident for an appearance on Tuesday’s “Today” show, a story on “NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams” and a one-hour “Dateline NBC” special.

The deal involves TV interviews and footage of the stricken planes taken by some of the sky divers’ helmet cameras, according to Mike Robinson, a sky-diving instructor who was involved in the incident near Lake Superior in northwest Wisconsin.

“NBC has the exclusive right,” Robinson said. “We can do print and radio interviews, but no TV interviews [other than for NBC] for two weeks. That’s the agreement.”

More after the jump.

CNN Boss Watches Ratings Dive

nbc-jeff-zucker.jpg

CNN Boss Jeff Zucker can't be happy that his network just had the lowest rated week since he took over the cable news channel.

In Primetime CNN had their lowest rated week since Summer of last year.

CNN pulled a small 385,000 total viewers and 95,000 in the demos. At the same time Fox News brought in 2,367,000 total viewers and 377,000 in the demo.

FNC came this/close to having as many demo viewers as CNN had total viewers.

Ouch!

left_logo_hln.png

Sources tell FTVLive that major layoffs have gone down at HLN.

Word is that people are being called into meetings in two different rooms. The people in one room are keeping their job. People in the other room are being pink slipped.

Word is that CNN Boss Jeff Zucker is moving all high-level editorial staff for CNN to New York.

HLN is moving from a news channel to much more entertainment based.

Albie Hecht is the head of HLN sent this memo to the staff:

While change is necessary to evolve HLN, it is also difficult. A handful of our family members will be impacted by today’s news. I know that I speak for all of us when I offer a heartfelt thank you and my sincere appreciation for their commitment.

In the six weeks since I’ve joined HLN, I’ve been continually impressed with your professionalism and passion. We have a real opportunity to grow the HLN brand; let’s get started.

Albie

UPDATE: Sources tell FTVLive that as much as 40% of the staff is gone from HLN. HLN shows Raising America and Evening Express have been canceled. Also we now hear that 'Now in America' is also being scrubbed from the schedule.

Sex and Traffic

Screen Shot 2013-11-04 at 10.44.26 AM.png

NY1's  traffic reporter Jamie Shupak  has hre first book out and it’s steamier than a subway platform in July.

Shupak who's is engaged to TV Critic Brian Stelter book is called “Transit Girl.”

The novel is fictionalized account of a woman named Guiliana Layne, who spends her mornings in front of the camera for a scrappy-but-beloved local cable station and her nights navigating the city’s romantic minefield, one bedroom at a time.

“I don’t want to back myself into a corner and have you use only one part of a quote,” says Shupak, “but sex isn’t a bad thing.”

Guiliana, Shupak’s alter ego in the book, certainly agrees, and sleeps with one guy after another to put distance between herself and her ex-fiancé, who was cheating on her with his assistant. After Guiliana finds out, she moves out, leaving her engagement ring, and everything else, behind. Except their dog, Zelda. She dognaps Zelda.

When police track her down, the petite beauty tackles a cop.

“I turn back to the officer and jump on him like a linebacker sacking a quarterback,” Shupak writes. “Zelda barks furiously alongside us as I pound on his chest, screaming at the top of my lungs about how I’m not going to give her up …”

Guiliana is arrested and slides headlong into depression. The only cure, it turns out, is to have sex with someone who is not her ex-fiancé.

We're guessing that Brian is really hoping that it is a work of fiction.

You can read more about her book in the NY Daily News
