Time to share some of the emails that cross our Inbox…..

A respected TV newsie reacts in regards to this story…..

D’Artagnan Bebel’s email about streaming-only households being an “ADDITIONAL threat to our business model” really speaks volumes about the state and mindset of local television.  TV owners and executives failed to account for a younger generation that didn’t have to wait until 6 pm for the news, as they could get it on their digital devices.

They were and still are content to stick with tradition.  The business model of selling airtime is essentially unchanged.  Newscasts today are largely the same as what we saw as children, and what our parents watched when they were children.

Yet, here we are in 2021.  The boomer generation that grew up on the concept of appointment television is dying off.  The younger generations, the ones TV owners ignored because it’s easier to stick with what you know than innovate, don’t need broadcast television.  They’re cutting cords and flocking to streaming services in growing numbers.  Rather than try to figure out how to reach the younger generations, people like D’Artagnan Bebel call the switch to streaming an “ADDITIONAL threat to our business model.”

And you wonder why TV viewership is dropping like a rock in Lake Erie?

Email:

Scott,

I’m wondering is there anyone at the college level that is teaching the J-School kids about what they should and should not post on social media?

I continue to cringe each time I open my SM and see the news anchors dancing or making fools of themselves.

Also, what’s up with the selfies?

Email:

Why do you continue to push your liberal agenda on us? You keep harping about the need to hire minorities and women while you tell us the industry is going to hell.

Did you ever think it is because of these same hirings you keep demanding?
