It only happens once every 50 years. America’s 250th birthday should have been the ultimate nonpartisan slam dunk—a moment for the entire country to take a breath, look at how far we've come, and celebrate together. Instead, the Semiquincentennial has devolved into just another deeply polarized battleground. If you’ve been watching the rollout for "The Great American State Fair" and the surrounding Freedom 250 events on the National Mall, it’s been tough to stomach. What was pitched to the public and the talent as a unified, nonpartisan celebration quickly took on the distinct energy of a political rally. The entertainment lineup collapsed under the weight of it. A massive wave of mainstream music acts—including Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, The Commodores, and Young MC—abruptly pulled out of the festivities. The artists all singing a remarkably similar tune: they were told the event was completely nonpolitical, only to realize after the announcement that they had been dropped into a highly charged partisan sandbox. As Young MC put it, it felt like a total bait-and-switch. When a celebration of America's birthday makes artists feel like they have to protect their brands just by showing up, the planning has completely failed. Worse yet, the division has spread straight to the states. Rather than a unified front showing off the best of all 50 states, multiple state delegations chose to entirely sit this out or skip sending official representation to the kickoff events, refusing to let their state branding be used as a political prop. It is incredibly sad. A 250-year milestone should be a bridge. Instead, the execution of this celebration has only managed to widen the cracks, driving people further into their respective corners when we should be standing together.
