It has officially gotten to the point where we no longer believe anything, or take it at face value anymore. Case in point: Senator Mitch McConnell was taken to the hospital a month ago. Because of the absolute vacuum of information, many people genuinely believed McConnell was dead, or at least "brain dead." There was little to no updated info. And since we passed the point of being able to trust a word out of a politician's mouth a long time ago, the conspiracy theories actually started to seem plausible. Then, yesterday, McConnell posted a picture on his social media holding up the Sunday paper in his lap. End of story, right? Hardly. First off, with how good AI is these days, it would be incredibly easy to fake a photo of McConnell sitting in a hospital bed wearing a button-down shirt and jeans. (Side note: how many times have you visited a hospital and seen patients chilling in their beds wearing denim? Exactly.) To make it weirder, McConnell then claims he had no broken bones, no concussion, no heart attack, and no real issues. He just "passed out"—and for that, he’s been tucked away in a hospital for a solid month. Seems a bit odd for a guy who supposedly has nothing wrong with him. My point is, we don't know what to believe, or who to believe. This is the world we now live in. If you're looking for someone to blame or point fingers at, I will give you two. It’s not just these two, obviously, but it is a damn good start. First, let's point a finger at Donald Trump. Look, I'm not here to get into the job Trump is doing or not doing. I just want to address this specific issue. The man is a serial liar. Ted Cruz told the American people nearly a decade ago that almost everything that comes out of Trump's mouth is a lie. For the past ten years, Trump has told lie after lie. Whether it was the "rigged" election, the "fake news," or that "Mexico was going to pay for the wall," he lies about big things and little things alike. No one cut a "350-foot gash in the reflecting pond" and his father was not born in Germany. When you have someone as big and powerful as Trump repeating falsehoods for over a decade, a lot of people naturally start to believe them. The second share of the blame goes right to the news media. For years, the press never really called Trump out on his lies. They didn't just let him lie; they actively aired those lies on their stations to chase ratings. His lie about the 2020 election was repeated by Fox News so often it ended up costing them three-quarters of a billion dollars in court. The mainstream media sat back while Trump branded them "fake news." There was little to no pushback, and then the right-wing media ecosystem adopted the phrase, drilling the point home to millions of viewers. When you have CNN telling you one thing and Fox News telling you the exact opposite, a huge chunk of the public simply doesn't know who to believe. Many people, like you and I, can see right through it. But there is a massive number of Americans who can't. I already know the replies I’m going to get in my inbox from this email. They'll say, "You're just biased against Trump, and Joe Biden lied as well!" It is always about the other side. Did Joe Biden lie? I'm sure he did, but not anywhere close to the scale of Trump. But I'm not here to play sides, and that isn't the issue. The issue is that people don't know who or what to trust. You used to be able to trust the media, but today, that trust is at an all-time low. And the less we believe, the further this country is going to slide downhill.
