Having sat in the TV news management chair, let me pull back the curtain on how this game works. TV companies routinely weaponize your ego to protect themselves. We see it every week across local news markets. A main anchor or veteran reporter suddenly posts: "The station offered me a new deal, but I’ve made the difficult decision to leave at the end of the month." Or: "Leaving was 100% my choice as I explore new adventures." Trust me, station management pops champagne when talent posts that kind of spin. Sure, the station technically "offered a contract"—along with a $15,000 pay cut. Or maybe the "new deal" moved the main 6 and 11 PM anchor to the noon show with mandatory weekend reporting duties. The talent gets to save face by saying an offer was on the table, but they conveniently leave out the insulting terms designed to push them out the door. Other times, there was no offer at all. Management simply offers a parting gift: "Tell the viewers you decided to retire, and we’ll let you work out the remaining month of your contract." Management banks on your pride. Your ego doesn't want to admit you were pushed out, and that fragile ego saves the very station that just kicked you to the curb a mountain of grief. If you tell viewers the unvarnished truth—that management showed you the door—the station takes the heat. Phones ring off the hook, the GM's inbox fills with angry viewers, and loyal watchers threaten to change the channel for good. If you pretend it was your idea to retire, management gets off scot-free. They release a slick statement about how "deeply saddened" they are to see you go, wishing you the best in your "well-deserved retirement." It’s ironic that we work in an industry dedicated to demanding the truth, yet the business is built on lies when it comes to personnel moves inside the building. The next time management shows you the door, stop doing them favors. Stop protecting the suit who just handed you a pink slip.
