Longtime KWQC Sports Director Thom Cornelis announced that he will retire Sept. 16, capping a career that has seen him become a fixture on the Quad-Cities sports scene.
"The night train is pulling out," he said "I just felt I've done all the damage I can do basically. It was just time. It's been a good ride."
Cornelis, 66, made the announcement during KWQC's 6 p.m. news program Tuesday. A Moline native, Cornelis graduated from Alleman High School in 1966 before attending Western Illinois University in Macomb, where he earned a degree in broadcasting in 1971.
Cornelis returned to the Quad-Cities, taking a job with WQAD, working there for 12 years before moving to KWQC, then known as WOC, in 1984.
"Thom has been a part of so many lives over his 30 years at KWQC," said news director Rich Kurz in a press release. "We'll deeply miss his expertise and the dedication to local sports he's demonstrated over that time."
