Longtime Austin Anchor Ron Oliveira has been a fixture TV for three decades. He has loved bringing Austin viewers the news, for the last 8 years on KEYE.
But now, Oliveira is being kicked to the curb. He will sign off from KEYE’s 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts on Friday.
“I was informed that the corporate office in Baltimore (Sinclair) decided not to renew my contract,” he said to the American-Statesman. “No reason was given. It took me by total surprise. I’m heartbroken because I love what I do.”
KEYE news director Greg Turchetta and general manager Amy Villarreal are hiding in their offices and not giving any comments of kicking the longtime anchor out the door.
Oliveira is the latest in a long line of well-known broadcasters to depart KEYE in recent months, including chief meteorologist Troy Kimmel, anchor/reporter Jason Wheeler and news director Suzanne Black.
