In two days, WPMT in Harrisburg, PA is going to expand their morning show..... to 5 Hours!
“Five hours may sound like a long time,” said News Director David Silverstein to TVNewsCheck, “but you must keep in mind that everybody has a different schedule in the morning. People wake up, get ready and get out the door. When you have a five hour spread of local news, as we now do, you're the only station able to serve Pennsylvanians no matter what time their day starts.”
So how do you fill 5 hours?
It's likely they will do it by running different versions of the same story over and over again.
Silverstein says in the soundbite above that "...everybody has a different schedule in the morning. People wake up, get ready and get out the door."
In other words they don't expect someone to sit through all 5 hours of news and if the viewer is bouncing in and out, repeating the same story over in over should have different viewers who see it.
Of course if you are watching the newscast for 5 straight hours, you might feel like you're in the movie Groundhog Day.
